This will be in a reform temple that has a lot of mixed marriages, including my daughter and her husband. She and I are not Jewish. Her husband is and they decided to raise their children as Jews. Her father and I are divorced and have both since married Jews so we are thoroughly "mixed"!
My husband and I will be allowed to undress/dress the Torah but not say aliyahs. However, I would like for us to do a reading at the service and link it to my granddaughter's Torah section, Shofetim Deuteronomy 16:18 to 21:9, about the election of a leader. The service is in early September so we'll be right in the middle of an election year. Altho we are all strong Democrats, it would, of course, be highly inappropriate for us to electioneer for the Dems in the service (even though I would guess just about everybody in this congregation, which is in the Boston area, would be Dems!).
Can anyone suggest appropriate readings, pertaining to the issue of leadership, that I could tie in to the service? I would not in any way want to undermine the religious significance of this service and the purpose of it, but since I am not Jewish I am not qualified to make religious references. I had in mind something philosophical, or even literary, that is consistent with the message of the Torah reading.
Thanks!
