Did Libby's Jewishness impact the CIA leak scandal?
When Joshua Muravchik, perhaps the pre-eminent expert on the interventionist foreign policy that has become known as neo-conservatism, was looking for non-Jewish neo-cons to prove that the movement isn't pervasively Jewish, he naturally included Lewis Libby.

"Non-Jews figuring prominently in current foreign-policy debates and today called neo-cons include Libby, (John) Bolton, American Enterprise Institute president Christopher DeMuth, and Gary Schmitt of the Project for the New American Century," Muravchik wrote in Commentary magazine two years ago.

"Go easy on me," Muravchik laughingly told a reporter this week, after it emerged that the man at the center of the White House leak scandal indeed is Jewish.

Libby resigned last Friday as Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff just hours after his indictment on perjury charges related to the leaking of the name of a CIA operative married to a prominent Bush administration critic.

1. SShhhhhhh...
I was appalled when I learned that Libby is Jewish. At least Novak became a Catholic. As my Grandma Sadie has said, it's a shanda for the goyim.

2. Shanda, indeed.
The whole thing is shit! I am disgusted by the PNAC group. I am disgusted by undue influence by foreign powers on our government. But, what disgusts me most...the so-called liberals and progressives that support Israel-bashing and Jew-bashing (by proxy, because all us good Hebes know that anti-Semitism doesn't exist on the left :eyes:)!

You ever notice the ones that love to make the "Jew" connection with PNAC are also the ones that scream the loudest about Joe Lieberman? I really don't care for Joe, except that he is very good on social issues.

What is even more interesting is that it was locked in the Politics forum, even though it came from a legitimate news source and there have been thousands of posts in DU about the religion of Libby.

Anti-semitism is starting to take a firm hold in the left. The real issue is will it chase Jews away from the polls?

3. Most neocons are men
I think we have a testosterone problem here, the need to control and dominate and inherently male problems.

5. Lol! That is a very sharp observation
And a true one ;-)

I wonder sometimes if that isn't the problem all over the world - a (re-)flourishing of old male values. Male honor, male power politics, and so on. Interesting angle, much more appropriate than to attach the current political situation to Jews, anyway.

6. As African American New Yorker, I see neo-cons as white ethnic not Jewish
The neo-conservative movement began in New York many years before it took over Washington. Originally it was a backlash of white, non-WASP New York intellectuals against the "excesses" of the 1960s, which you can read as the change from supporting desegregation far away in the South to being confronted with desegregation in their own neighborhoods up here in New York. There was also an element of "circling of the wagons" after the 1967 and 1973 middle east wars, and a general hardening against detente with the Soviets.

But it wasn't composed just of Jews, but basically formerly cold war liberal New York intellectuals who were mostly Jewish, Catholic, Irish and Italian, such as Daniel Patrick ("benign neglect") Mohnihan, and Jeanne ("authoritarianism is good, but totalitarianism is bad") Kilpatrick.

Originally they were, as the old joke went, former liberals who had been mugged, which basically meant urban white ethnics, which included Jews, Italians, and Irish Americans.

It's pretty difficult to connect the current neo-cons to its current incarnation, however.
