Could type 2 diabetes be reversed using surgery?

Abdominal surgery is a radical way of losing weight, but could it also cure type 2 diabetes?

Duodenal exclusion is a form of gastric bypass surgery in which the upper small intestine or duodenum is removed, so that the stomach feeds directly into the mid-small intestine. This reduces the amount of time the body has to absorb calories from food, meaning people lose weight.

Surgeons performing duodenal exclusions on obese people with diabetes had noticed that in around 98 per cent of cases the patients' diabetes spontaneously vanished a few weeks after surgery - too soon to be accounted for by weight loss.

I'm wondering if it would also cause problems with the absorption of some nutrients.

1. Malabsorption syndrome

Unfortunately, this will cause more problems than it cures. The miracle of the small intestine is that different nutrients are absorbed along different parts of it. Cutting out a drastic amount of gut will drop weight, sure, but it's also very likely to eliminate the absorption of a lot of very important nutrients.

A better solution is to exercise as much as possible, cut calories, monitor blood glucose, and slow the progression of the disease as much as possible.

A quick fix is likely to cause more problems than it cures.

2. That's also a concern with Crohn's sufferers.

Using surgery to cure something that might be based on behavior/habit seems a bit extreme.

3. No kidding!!

I'm willing to try harmless things (like Cinnamon) to try to lessen the amount of medication I have to take, but have part of my intestines cut out? No. Just No.

I was one of the unfortunate people that exercised, dieted, monitored, etc and still progressed to taking medication. I'm on 2000 mg of Metformin and take Prandin now. The exercise/diet combo only worked for about 3 years and then my Post-Prandial blood sugar started spiking up, so it was better to start the meds than keep suffering.

4. It's better to start the meds than go blind,

start having amputations, and become a cardiac cripple with burned out kidneys.

Diabetes is nothing to play with!

Good for you on recognizing that and treating it appropriately.
