Whether the hayfever type or the food-allergen type:
I was talking to a nurse at the local ER regarding treatments for my severe reactions to food allergies, and he said that Tagamet is a histamine blocker (all the local pharmacists say that this is news to them). I tried it in conjunction with benadryl and it greatly reduced my symptoms from not-quite-lethal to moderate. The tagamet blocks some histamines from being released, greatly reducing the amount that the anti-histamine has to clean up. It's a one-two punch, and it's great.
I recommend it for anyone who suffers from either type. You can take up to 30 mg, three times a day, he said, which is 1-1/2 tablets, three times a day. It's made my life bearable again.
