It was a terrific service in an ELCA (Lutheran) church, with a really terrific pastor. I was thrilled when I went into his office, and his laptop was streaming Friday's edition of Countdown!!
I gave the sermon/memorial, and did the committal service at the cemetery. It was a very moving and emotional day, filled with all kinds of love. Unfortunately, my Dad was unable to make it. He's 89, and can no longer travel long distances. I brought a notebook with me, so many people could write messages for him.
Later in the afternoon, we went to my uncle's house, which was literally falling apart... filthy, layers of dust at least an inch thick, etc... And I saw the bedroom, and the bloodstains on the headboard of the bed and the wall. That was tough, but also in a way, healing.
All I can say is that I know in my heart that Ernie is at peace. Before I drove home, I stopped at the cemetery again, to spend some time with Ernie, my grandparents, and my uncle Paul (who died in 1945). I was listening to the Durufle and Faure requiems, and played them all the way home. The most amazing peace came over me, and as the sun set over the hills of northern Wisconsin, a few deer came out to greet me on my way home.
