I just built a bridge.

My favorite trail needed a new bridge. I managed to get a couple of one foot diameter redwood logs across the creek. And then I sawed up planks. Sorry about the shit photography. I wanted to get more pictures, but they didn't work. There's a section of trail that is only a couple of feet wide along a cliff. It is some of the best riding I've ever done. About three miles of ten percent grade.

If it's not too heavy be sure and tip it out of the way for high water...they can disappear pretty fast.

2. This thing is permanent.

There are two redwood logs under it that are twenty feet long and over a foot in diameter. I'd say it's over a ton.

Even with a block and tackle I got some serious blisters even with gloves.

There's no major water here. It's just a gap in one of the canyons this trail winds through.


This trail is a blistering two miles of singletrack that is unmatched on the west coast, that I know of. I wondered about this place for ten years. Now I'm renting down the street from it.

It's mountain bike heaven.

Anyways, I'm pretty thrilled. I live for this stuff. Silence, redwoods, and a fast heartbeat.

Makes me want to take up mountain biking, although my road bikes are already a little too efficient at emptying my wallet.

My Shangri-La here in L.A. is a 30 mi stretch of Angeles Crest Highway that cuts through Angeles National Forest. It's currently closed to cars, due to a washout. For over an hour you can ride down a road at 25mph in complete silence, save for the sound of your tires and the wind in the pines. Very therapeutic. :thumbsup:

I just bought the Ibis Mojo. But their road bike frame is unbelievable. I bought a road bike around 1970. I was all Campy. Sewups. I loved that thing. It still sits here. I rode the best roads in the state. All along the SF peninsula. Every day. I wouldn't set foot on a road now days. It's like being a target. But it sounds like you've got a nice situation.

5. Mmmm.

I'm probably good on my Trek for another five years. I personally would get minimal benefit from any bike that costs more than $2K.

About that target thing...I got hit by a car last September--separated shoulder, surgery, and still very lucky. I was riding alone. Going to stick to riding with my club for a while. If we had better trails around here I'd consider giving it up for MTB.

I just got an ecstatic call tonight. Evidently I've set a new standard in bridge building here. I moved here a few months ago. It's official that I'm a part of the scene!

Yeah, I'm working really hard to get away from the CAR. Mountain biking does that.

In fact, I'm actually looking for a piece of property to live on based on bike riding. It's not the typical criteria that a realtor gets from a client. And I'm not sure it's the smartest move. But biking is about the most important thing in my life.

Hah. There. That's my diatribe for the day.
