The last couple of evenings have been really nice here in Central Texas. (Last night's hail didn't come until well after the sun had set.) Really beautiful weather for riding. Gorgeous weather, bright and cool, the landscape green and leafy.
We live out in the sticks, a few miles north of Lockhart. Lockhart is a bedroom community to the southeast of Austin. We live in an unincorporated area, for the most part still pretty rural. I can walk down to the end of my street and feed grass to the neighbor's cows. We have several miles of paved and dirt roads to ride on, hardly any traffic. Everyone still waves out here as they drive by.
I get home from work a little after 6pm as a rule. Now that daylight savings time is here, it's a great opportunity to get out on the road with my kids and do a little riding.
I have a daughter who will turn 9 in May. My son just turned 4 in January. They both love to ride their bikes, and they love it even more when their Papa can ride with them.
The last couple of evenings have been great! I've been able to hop out of the car, get the kids ready, and get on the bikes. We ride down to a bridge about 3/4 of a mile away down the twisty-turny road in front of our house. That's about as far as the boy can go right now, but he's building endurance. It's a good trip for him, about 1.5 miles round trip, with small hills. We'll rest at the bridge and maybe go down to where the water is, looking for fossils or frogs. It's good playtime.
There's no real point to this post. Or maybe that's the point, I don't know. Bicycling is a joy, but it's not always about mileage or stats or speed. Sometimes it's a simple journey to a bridge with those we love, taking time to smell the wildflowers and take in the views. My inspiration can be found in watching two little people learn to love the wind rushing by.
Ya'll be good.
