Anybody ever find "unclaimed money" before?

We got a letter from "The Keane Organization Inc. of Wayne Pa" saying that they were aware of 2 accounts that have so far been unclaimed that are part of my father's estate.

They want 35%, though. Which comes to $17,000.

Does anyone have any tips on how to do this without their help? Do books like this one work?

My mom is freaking out.

1. yes - got back $4000 a couple of years back

I was on one of the state sites and saw my name. I followed the procedures and in a few weeks received a check. Never did find out why, and never felt like asking. It was a true gift.

Now, that said - each state has a site where you can investigate these lost money claims yourself - and not be obligated to pay any finder's fee.

I would do that first.

There is a site that lists the urls for each state. I will see if I can find it and will post it.

2. Wow!

I just checked my state's unclaimed property site and I found my father and my uncle on it! It is a tidy sum of money and I happen to have all of the documents (wills, etc.) I need to claim it!

Thank you SO MUCH for reminding me about this. I'd checked in the past and none of those listed were "mine". I recently had a HUGE veterinary bill (close to $2,000.00) and I've been so devastated as my poor sweet dog is now gone. :( I've been just crying my eyes out about it, not so much because of the money, but because of the entire situation surrounding her death. :cry:

I'll have the money to pay the bill now and btw, my father and my uncle both loved dogs and I know if they were still alive they would have paid this bill or they would have sent me a check to cover it! :D

3. google this to find it

type in "unclaimed property" and the name of your state. Hopefully a site will come up. Try to claim it yourself. I sure wouldn't pay a lawyer 35% of it if you might be able to simply do it yourself. :)

4. Yes, found a few dollars for my mom. I definitely agree with DUers saying

... go through the state treasurer or consumer affairs dept. rather than a third party.

If I understand correctly, the law says you shouldn't have to pay ANYBODY a single DIME to claim "lost" funds.

5. I just got the money!

I filed for it at the end of Sept. and just got it on Friday! :woohoo:

I did this on my own, had no "representative" and I have to pay no taxes on it nor report it either! :D

7. I did it as a lark. There was no WA Y I had any $ outstanding...

I ended up with about $700 from some insurance thing on my condo.

It never hurts to check.

I went through the AG in Texas (and they charged a fee.) States may vary.

8. I Bought an Unclaimed Money Subscription

as a gift for my father once. I was disappointed to find out that the only listings were for deaths recent enough to be listed electronically -- not nearly the horizon I was hoping for. Just a word of caution if you're considering it.

9. Yes, we got a letter like that about 10 yrs ago.

The group who sent us the letter was right, but they wanted 33% "finders fee" for getting us the money. We had to send them documentation. I suppose they would have done it, but we never tried. Once we knew we had money leftover with the FHA, we contacted them directly and got all the money back ourselves. 100% with no finders fee to anyone. You shouldn't need a book. Just read the letter carefully enough to see where you might have "lost" the m oney.
