We are thinking about E-filing.
Never have done it.

How do you sign the return?
Is a signature required, like on the paper form?

1. The software walks you through the steps needed to do an electronic signature.

I've been using Turbo Tax for about 5 years now and the first year it was no big deal. I have found it very easy to use. The questions are very thorough.

If i remember that 1st year correctly, the main identifier is your AGI from your last years return. You'll need to have that handy when you get to that step. It is one of the last things you do before you submit the return to the IRS.

2. I switched from Turbotax to Tax Cut

They both are great. I switched because Tax Cut has the same functionality as Turbotax at a lower price. Heretic is correct about need the AGI from last year's return to E-file. It is easy to do. You receive an ECN# (electronic confirmation number) back in a few days after you E-File. Both programs will also import tax related items from financial programs like Quicken or MS Money. The one thing that I had problems with last year was the import function on Tax Cut from Quicken. They seemed to have fixed that in the 2006 version.

5. I agree, i just used Turbo Tax for the first time after TaxCut

and Tax Cut works better for me and costs less.

3. Have been using TurboTax on the Internet

so I don't have to purchase the program each year.

It keeps the information - address, SS#, employer, etc. - from previous years, so all I have to do is check that nothing changes. Also the checking account number for the refunds to go directly.

Last year I did it in early February and the state refund was there within a week, the Federal - two weeks.

And it can download the info from W-2 and 1099 directly from the institutions that issue them, so less chances of typos.

The "signature" is a password that you select.

I am ready to do 2006 now. Had to wait for corrected mortgage interest from the incompetent people in the office.

4. We use Turbo Tax, but always have printed it out and mailed it

in. I think it cost extra to E-file and we are cheap.
