Any ideas how to find deaths/ cemeteries in Manhattan?

My husband's great grandparents came from Russia in 1890 and moved to West 114th St. where they had a laundry in 1910-by 1920, the husband, Louis Handler, is deceased. Does anyone know of a place I could maybe find out what cemetery he is buried in, or where I could get records when I don't know the date of his death? The family was Jewish, but not strict, if that makes any difference.

Enter a town and state, and it gives you the county. Since I'm not extra familiar with New York geography, New York AND Kings County show up.

Find the webpage for each county, and they usually have cemetery transcriptions, depending on what has been submitted by volunteers. Here are come cemetery links:

If there isn't a transcription online, you could try calling a few of the Jewish cemeteries. If that doesn't work, you could start branching out from there.

4. Manhattan Cemeteries

I am not of Jewish background, but I have many ancestors buried in NY, including Manhattan.

Perhaps if you contacted a Jewish Community Center (like one I lived across from in Portland, OR, quite a large facility) or a synagogue, the folks there might even have a list!

Steve Morse's website has some useful search engines. Mind you, you'll have to experiment with them and find which works for you. I did a test drive of the New York City death index (using one of my great-grandfathers), and the Morse site came up with the right date and also provided a certificate number. Just ignore the logo and title "Italian Genealogical Group" at the top of the web page; results are not limited to one ethnic group.

I was successful in locating my grandparents as well as some other lost relatives by using the above links. Most of my lost relatives were in the Jewish cemeteries in Queens (Mt Hebron). I was able to find my grandfather in the Italiangen database which gave me his date of death and certificate number. I sent for his death certificate, which led me to a cemetery here in NJ, only about 20 minutes from my home. It was a long process as I had been looking for a number of years, before some of this info was online.

8. Have you searched the New York Times archive?

I've got a lot of New York relatives from that time period, mostly Jewish, so I've been going through the NY Times online archive, for a few months now, and have found a LOT of them there.

Also, you might check the website for Temple Emanu-El, they have a great new website and they will quickly (and personally) answer your e-mail if you write to them with the info you wrote here.

I think Temple Emanu-El and Temple Beth-El merged into one Temple around 1900 or so, but before that, Temple Emanu-El buried their dead in Brooklyn at Salem Fields Cemetery and I think Temple Beth-El used Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx before they merged.
