Okay.

I've been thinking about it and due to rising gas prices, if you have anyone that you're looking for in the southwest corner of Missouri, I am volunteering to look for them and either send or put the info. Keep in mind that time is sometimes difficult to get for this, but if you're patient, I will be more than happy to look for those who can't afford to come themselves.

1. That's a really great offer!
Do you ever get up to Bates County? I've got a Civil War pension file on order to find more information on when and where my guy died, but he lived in that area for awhile. His first wife is buried in Mulberry Cemetery up there.

I know all of us are always grateful for offers like this. You are a great American! :D

2. What's his name.?
Bates county is a little bit of a distance but I need to go up there to look for some more info for myself. I've been planning a trip this spring.

That would be so great!

I'm still looking for him. Unfortunately, his Civil War file wasn't at the National Archives where it's supposed to be, so I had to put in a FOIA request for it to see if that was his final resting spot. I'm still waiting for info-- it's been transferred to a couple VA offices so far, and I've got a road map of where the request has been sent, but no info yet.

His name was Rufus B. Hall, but his first wife (the one I'm related to) was Fanny Hall. She is buried in Mulberry Cemetery-- I'll check my notes when I get home to see exactly where it was. I think the town was Mulberry too. She died, and then Rufus married a lady named Nora. I found them in censuses for a little while, then {{{{{poof}}}}.

I seem to recall them leaving Bates County, but don't remember where. Johnson County, maybe.

6. Yep, grave website says...
Mulberry Cemetery is about 2 1/2 miles south of Mulberry, Missouri. And that's where Fanniy (might be spelled Fannie) Hall is. That's what I have so far!

7. I've been planning on requesting my vacation in May
which is when I plan to go to Bates County.

In the meantime, I made use of my subscription to ancestry.com and found a Rufus (misspelled Ruphes) B., age 63, born in Ohio, and Nora in the 1900 census in Warrensburg Township, Johnson County, Missouri who may or may not be your Rufus but who you might want to consider as a possibility. I will see what I can find in Bates Co. for you in May and if there I can find something to indicate whether Rufus died in Bates Co or moved elsewhere.

8. Yep, that's him.
I was at work when I wrote last, so didn't have all my notes in front of me. That would be so fabulous, if you do that.

Let me know if I can give you something for gas out to the cemetery or something. I doubt I'll get a pic of Fannie to put in the book, but a picture of her tombstone would be a nice substitute, and I'll probably never get anywhere near Bates County! :D

9. Don't worry about gas, paper, etc.
I'm going for myself as well and that's not the way I do things anyway. :) I finally put all my genealogy pictures and scanned info on a free standing hard drive as well as the computer that I typically use.

10. Good going!
It only takes one heavy thunderstorm to lose all that stuff.

I have a bazillion pix that I've traveled around the country to get, so I have mine on my laptop, back up to CDs, and have them on my desktop. Then, I put an occasional copy of the CDs with pix, family data files AND book files all in the safe for extra protection!

You are a gem, cornermouse.

3. Have you looked at the website "Find a Grave"?
It's an old site, but you might find something there or you can put in a photo request there too.

11. Nora filed for Civil War Widow benefits
on 17-aug-1908, so I would bet Rufus died not too long before that. (Application #902662, Certificate #665119)

12. Where did you find that?
I've been looking all over for anything that would indicate something like that, and I'm very impatient!

:D

13. Sorry for the delay FSC, I don't DU on the weekends!
I found that info at ancestry.com in the Civil War Pensions index.

Source Information:
National Archives and Records Administration. Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934 . Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2000. Original data: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. T288, 544 rolls.

I put the image in my photobucket, I hope you can read it:

I'm happy to help. If you have an ancestry subscription, they recently added a boatload of Missouri records. I am finding all sorts of names and dates. Good Luck!

Rosie

14. I'm an idiot!
I downloaded that awhile back, but because of my crappy vision (MS eyes, as I call them), I didn't even notice the dates on the far left side.

They just looked like registration numbers or something like that. Thanks for being my Annie Sullivan. That may give me a bit more ammo to go looking.

Fortunately, this couple is about my only connection to Missouri. The rest of it is all in large pockets in Wisconsin, New York, California, Alberta and BC Canada, Washington State, and Texas. There are a little bit all over, there.

Thanks for your help!
:hi:

15. Hello.
Edited on Fri May-16-08 10:37 PM by cornermouse
I have a question about Rufus before I go to Bates and Johnson Co looking for info and gravestones. Was his father Lyman E. Hall and did Rufus spend his childhood in Scipio, Seneca, Ohio?

I should add that you might want to give some thought to a temporary email address or a P.O. box so that I can send whatever I find to you.
