Can you believe this con from a genealogy company?
I posted this here about the free DNA test from SMFG..I had already sent my test away. I remember the day because it was the day before my birthday and I told my son that would be a good birthday present for myself.

Well I got an email back on March 14, 2008 saying that if I was one of the test group, who requested and sent the kit back before December 31, 2007 I qualified for a fee of $19.50 to unlock the sequence and receive the markers. I was elated I had sent it back before December - two weeks before. then I get the email back from the sister company, who SMFG said did the research a company called GeneTree that they didn't receive it in time and to get the results I would have to pay the full price $189.00.

CAN YOU IMAGINE THE OUTRAGE. I am telling you people so you don't get suckered in. How can I even trust the results if I bought it with a con this obvious. I am now contacting FamilyTree DNA and getting a group price from our surname. Don't be taken in by this company...GENETREEDNA.

1. Wow. This is the first I've heard of this.
Have you been in touch with any of the genealogy publications to perhaps write a column on this issue?

2. You can still get your results free from SMFG
It may be a year before they show up the online database though. You don't have to go through Genetree.

3. I've posted it on several of the genealogy lists I belong to.
First I did not ask for the $19.50 fee they sent me an email and said I could pay that amount and get the results. That is what makes me mad. I was not expecting that. Our surname group is starting to do DNA's. We have sent off to have our surname checked and the male donor is waiting for the kit. As soon as it is done we will go with that company they are reputible. FamilyTreeDNA. So folks don't get the con I did.
