Anyone know what happened to the county websites that
rootsweb.com used to have? I went there today to check the hours and locations of the local genealogical societies and found them missing. Did ancestry.com delete them or are they still there somewhere?

2. Thank you.
I don't know why I didn't check the other counties. I know that I've found information on Bates Co. before too, though. Anyway. Thank you.

3. Aw, they changed all the links...
must have upgraded their servers. Pissed me off completely a few weeks ago, since they screwed up just about every genealogy link on the internet.

Bookmark this site:
http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi

It's the main town/county database site. I use it at least once a week, usually, when I discover a new family branch and have to figure out what county they're in.

When you click the blue link for the county, you get the county sites. Sometimes it will come up that way, or sometimes you have to google "Green County" genealogy to get the link up.

4. It is driving me crazy as well.

Not only do I have lots of links, I have lots of source links on my source page. Ahhhhh, plus many of the GenWebs moved to other servers. I've been wondering just what has been going on with RootsWeb recently.

5. What did they do
Did they take out all those personal county pages people had done? Or am I thinking of some other site.

6. Pretty much everything based through Ancestry...
has changed addresses. The county pages, and just about everything else.

All the links are broken. They must have upgraded the server, and changed the IP address. In doing so, they destroyed everyone's bookmarks, and half the links on the net are broken. That's why everyone has been finding more broken links lately.

7. I emailed them about it.
They denied that they had anything to do with it. The told me that it was genweb's fault.
:eyes:
I thought "Yeah right. Sure they did. Um hmm."

8. Yeah right.
These are more than just GenWeb websites. Everything I've checked has an ancestry name in it somewhere.

They are the Corporate America of the genealogy world.

10. I've just seen this post...

I heard about the exodus from a friend who runs a few genweb sites... the advice she gave was to go to the national page, then state, and try it that way.

(Google "rootsweb announcement usgenweb" for a lowdown on what happened.)

On edit... more info

11. When ancestry bought rootsweb I was afraid they were
going to shut rootsweb down, take the info and make people pay for it. This is not much different from what I was afraid of. Not that it did much good, but I sent them a couple of emails and told them how angry I was at them. The bums emailed me back that it wasn't their fault that state sites had simply decided to move off site.

12. I still wouldn't put it past them.

If it wasn't for the census images, I'd ditch my subscription in a heartbeat. But it's too difficult for me to get Heritage Quest since I live overseas, because I don't have a library card. So that makes it hard to get US census images. And I don't know of a site that has as many UK census images online as they do, either.
