First of all, I didn't know this forum existed! Second, I'm looking for a relative born in Canada

As far as I can tell, the 1820s in Canada were kind of like the wild west - Loyalists who had escaped the United States, lumberers, and people looking for cheap farmland, all milling about each other and not keeping any records.

I have a relative who died in Wisconsin in 1902 who was born in Canada East in 1827 or 1828. He says on his census form that his father was born in Connecticut and his mother in Vermont. Was he just making this up to avoid naturalization? Who knows?

I'd like to find some information that would open the door for getting to his father and mother, wherever they were born.

Got any ideas?

1. PM me sweetie...

I usually go to Madison every couple of weekends. They have state death certs up until 1907, so I can check and see if he's there. The death cert may provide a birthplace and/or parents' names.

Or, you can check here first, let me know if he shows up, and give me the county, roll #, and record # for him and I can get you a copy when I go.

How you been? I met you in St. Paul in 2005. Remember me?

3. I remember you!

I wish Madison were a little closer. I think I'd like to take a look at the historical society records!

I checked his name in the website and could only find an entry for his marriage to his third wife in La Crosse.

:hi:

5. I take that back - I found his death record

I had already talked to the clerk in Jackson County about it, and I think I know everything that's on it, but I ordered it anyway, just to be sure.

Thanks for the great tip!

6. You're welcome!
It'll be 2 months at least before you get it. Let me know if you need any of that info beforehand.

I won't be able to get there for 3 weeks (wedding shower, wedding, and connonym's Labor Day thing all fall on Saturdays!) but let me know. I can try to get a copy and scan it for you.

They just recently got that thing working, and it has been great. But they misentered a lot of the data. I've found several kids' birthdates by checking their fathers' names. And sure enough... guys are listed as the father, not the child. They need to fix that.

Let me know if I can help otherwise. You might also want to check the Canadian 1901 or 1911 censuses. I don't have the links with me right now, but do a Google search. The site will probably come up.

In other news, I'm up to 950 pages on MY book (the one I was in St. Paul researching...) :D

7. Also, remember...
in genealogy you have the STATE certificate (sometimes) depending on when a state started keeping their records, and the county record as well.

Start with the state, and if they don't have what you need, check with the county.

2. Canada genealogy
I was looking for, I think, genealogique.ca, or something along those lines. But in looking through these Google search links, I've used most of them for researching my ancestors. I've got some that came to Canada in the 1600's. I've got lots of links saved, if you get to a more specific city or province. Mostly Montreal and Quebec, but I've got a few for Nova Scotia and whatnot, because I've got one that I just cannot find and so I look for him everywhere.

I'll be combing through those resources for months, I expect!
