How good is the 2010 Family Tree Maker software?
I'm puttering along with the 2005 version, but have recently inherited a small amount of money and can upgrade. Does the 2010 allow one to burn a "book" on CD rather than paper publishing? How 'bout other software? Better? Worse?

1. I am using FTM 2010
I haven't used the book publishing stuff but it looks like everything is exported in .pdf format so i believe you can burn that to a cd for anyone to read.

I upgraded from 2006 version and haven't had any problems. You can see more information on a typical screen and can customize the screens to a certain extent. I like it.

If you order it from Ancestry, google for promo codes. I found one for 20% off any order after Ancestry sent me a pre-order special for 2010. It was cheap enough I couldn't pass up the upgrade.

2. Thanks for the info
I got that promo offer as well, which is what prompted my query.

3. I just changed from FTM2005 to FTM2010
Given the time when you posted this question, you've probably already made a choice. I much prefer FTM 2005. I may not be using 2010 correctly, but when 2010 takes me to the One World Web, it doesn't give me the choice of checking the family through an Ahnentafal or Register. Also, 2010 makes choices for you and sometimes leaves out important choices. As an example by great grandmother was married twice, and 2010 omitted her on the 1910 census because then she was using the name of the second husband. I'm keeping both 2005 and 2010 on my desktop but choose 2005 when I want to do some serious searching.

Of course, part of my resistance may be my resistance to change. With a fixed Sun, Moon and Ascendant, I like to stay with what's familiar.

6. I agree. The newest version is much harder to negotiate. Also it
is not as easy to get all the info on one page. There is a possibility that I do not understand how to use it.

5. Well... for NOW, I'm glad they came out with 2011.
Would it be unfair to refer to 2010 as FTM's Vista...?

Anyway, I was miserable with the constant, CONSTANT crashing. I can't tell you how many times I had to delete the user data folder.

2011? No idea what the new features (if any) are, I'm just glad it doesn't crash AS OFTEN (I did have to reinstall at some point, after which it does seem more stable).
