My Niece Just Gave Birth to a Baby Girl. Am I a Great Aunt, or a Grand Aunt?

I have an interest in Genealogy, but am such a novice. My family thinks I am now a great aunt, but I am thinking it's "Grand Aunt".

Does anyone know? :shrug:

1. Same thing, AFAIC. Our family uses the term great-aunt.

2. This has been confusing me as well.

I was always told that my parent's aunts and uncles were my "great" aunts and uncles, but you are right; that's kind of skipping a level in the aunt/uncle department. Why should one's grandparents be "grand" but their siblings be "great"? It seems like the "great" aunts and uncles should start at the same generation as the great-grandparents, no? :shrug: The info I've seen so far on this is conflicting on the great/grand aunts/uncles, some sources saying "grand", some "great". But it makes more sense to me that you are a grand-aunt.
