help with 19th century locations, please
I have several ancestors whose census records place them as living in beats, such as Beat 10, Pike County, Alabama.

I can't find any resource that tells me where these beats would be in modern terms. Any help is appreciated.

2. Beats appear to be county sub-divisions.
We call them 'Townships' in Illinois.
