Persinger Family Journals (Alleghany Co, Va)

These journals are a treasure trove, well worth the reading even if you aren't related to the Persinger and Craft families of Va. If you are related, then they are invaluable.

If you have any connection to Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, or Amherst Co in Va, you'll appreciate these journals.

Also, if you are black, white, Native American, especially Cherokee, or mulatto, then I believe you'll appreciate these journals, no matter where you live.

My gggrandfather was Benjamin Craft, his son was Jacob. They were the ones who acted as "dentists" for the residents in the tri-county area (Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig). Jacob was my g.uncle, and he married Phebe (Phoebe) Persinger, daughter of Sarah Persinger and Joseph Sparrowhawk.

I'm so grateful for Mary and Susan Persinger, who posted the journals. They are direct descendents of Mary Margaret Persinger, the author of the journals.

3. I can hear the voices of my great-grandmothers

when I read these wonderful pages. I was lucky to know them all, which is a very good thing considering they were not nearly as literate as your relatives (quite a long time ago!), but the stories they told are priceless. I hope this forum will stay.

4. I grew up in Alleghany Co.,

and many of the older folks around here talked like that. It's music to my ears. You're so lucky to have known your g.grandmothers. I only knew my mother's mother. All the rest were gone before I arrived on the scene. I do have letters my maternal g.grandparents wrote to each other when he was serving with the Union Army during the Civil War. My paternal g.grandfather was fighting for the Confederacy. Good thing they didn't run into each other, or I might not be here!

5. When I started on my own genealogy project

I had no idea how very closely we are "all" related. All branches of my family were forced into Indian Territory, but I know that one branch began in Virginia. Very interesting stuff you have posted. I'm glad you are here, too. Thank you!
