Idea.....(if it hasn't been done already)
Why don't we all post the names of family lines we're researching. It would be pretty weird if someone else had part of your tree!

I need the last names: David (Daa-veed), Mershon-Merchand, Dilworth, Goble, Stout, Jackson, Collins, Cox, Brinton, Wooley, Copley, Rush, West, Hicks

Specifically: Andrew Jackson Stout, father/mother/siblings of Virginia
Elizabeth Collins, upper KY
B. Goble w/Lena, somewhere near Terre Haute, IN
William, Anderson, Abraham Jackson, Virginia (full
blood Cherokee)migrated to SE Ohio
David family of Hardin, KY

Cox, Brinton, West (Benjamin-the painter), Edward Hicks
(painted "Peaceable Kingdom"), Benjamin Rush (signed
Declaration of Independence)...all of/around Chester
County, PA

Mershon-New Jersey

3. My Comer/Coomer family was in RI, MA and NY...
in the 1700 and 1800's.

I'm also related to the Alden/Mullins/Peabody (Pabodie) group, through the daughter Elizabeth Alden. That was a VERY prolific family. :-)

2. Here are a few of mine
Robertson, Steel/Steele, Arthur, Wolfsen, Howell, Kelly, Brewer, Eaton, Hopkins, Coomer/Comer, Bassett, Easton, Mersereau/Mercereau, Hicks, Bennett, Lochridge/Lockridge, Chastain

I see you are also working on Hicks...my Hicks family lived in TN in the 1830's.

My husband has Collins relatives, who I know lived in PA, then went to MN and then on to CA.

I'm not related to but know a Brinton family who is LDS and into genealogy. I've gotten Christmas cards from them that have an etching of an early Brinton ancestor's house in NY or somewhere back there. I can ask if you like

4. I see you have
Howell in there. Any Quaker Howells ending up in western Illinois around 1840? Easton, and Eaton also sound familiar.

Elizabeth Collins married William Jackson. I found a William Jackson in a book of early OH tax records yesterday. Hopefully he is my 3Ggrandpa. There are many Collins families in my "Early Ohio Settler" books.

Do you know how early your Collins' were in PA? It seems everyone is starting out in Virginia or PA, and moving to OH (at least temporarily), when it was opened for settlement. I haven't studied early OH yet. There was a lot of military land at first. I may find my earliest Jackson was an Indian scout for the military in VA, and rewarded with a land grant in OH.

I believe those would be the right Brintons. This would be the house...http://www.brintonfamily.org/genemain.html My 8th Ggrandpa's house is also in Chester PA. Some of the Brintons married into my Dilworth, and Mershon lines, as did Howells. The Levis Brinton house is also on the internet (I haven't made it back to William yet). It was a safe house for wounded British soldiers.

The whole bunch...Howell, Copley, Dilworth, Cox, Wooley, Brinton, etc. ended up near Nauvoo, Illinois, as did the Mershons, although they were Revolutionary War soldiers. It's strange to think about the Quakers patching soldiers up, and sending them back out to be shot at by Mershons. :)

A lot of the Brintons and Wooleys became Mormons, and were witness to the Joseph Smith incident at Nauvoo, eventually leaving in the Great Migration to Utah.

I'm the one who lost my tree in a computer crash. I do have a series of six Mershon books. Thank God I don't have to redo that line. I'll have to see which Brintons, Howells, and Eastons are in there.

It would be really kind of you to hook me up with a Brinton. It would be nice if I could help with your Howells, and Easton/Eatons. Also, do you know which way the Hicks went after 1830?

5. Phew, lots of stuff there!
I'll go in order of what you mentioned...

My Howell family didn't have any Quaker connections that I know of. My GGgrandmother Amelia Howell was born in England in 1845. Her parents later joined the Mormon church and came to the US, first to Missouri, then to Utah, then on to CA by the 1860's.

I know for sure my husband's GGgrandfather Amos Collins was born in PA in 1834. I'm not sure how long before that the family was there. I believe his parents were Henry Bennett Collins and Eliza Montgomery, though I have no birth certificate, just lots of strong circumstantial evidence. :-)

Yes, I think those are the same Brintons! I found this picture on the site which looks like the pic I have seen before:

I think the dad has mentioned his Brinton ancestors were also Mormon pioneers, so that fits with what you said. I can call them tomorrow and ask if it's OK to send your their email address. I think they'd like to talk with you.

My oldest confirmed Easton was Julian G. Easton born in Litchfield, CT in 1784. His daughter was born in NY. I found his name in an old Easton genealogy book, on a page that was titled something like Other Eastons Who We Think Are Related To Us But We're Not Sure. Members of THAT Easton family were some of the original English settlers of CT.

My Eaton family lived in Ashabula, OH, in 1833 then WI, then CA.

I actually don't know what happened to the Hicks family much after the 1830's. My GGgrandmother was Nancy Hicks born in Sequatchie Co TN in 1832. She married and stayed in TN. I don't know if she had siblings who went elsewhere.

Interesting that in just a few posts we find paths that cross!

6. I'm sorry
When genealogy starts pouring from my head, it just won't stop :) Guess I better put it back on paper before I turn senile.

I have one Eaton buying land in early Ohio, a Robert, who purchased in 1829 & 1831, although he purchased in Tuscarawas County which is S, and W of Ashtabula. He gives his residence as Tuscarawas County (open to sales in 1811), which means he had staked a claim, and lived on the land before purchase. Ashtabula County is in the NE corner. It was first open to sales in 1811. Before that it was lumped in with all the counties in the NE corner, and called "The Connecticut Reserve". It says it was ceded to the US in 1800, although I can't figure out who it was ceded by.

Do you think he may be related? He may have gotten a good price for his original purchase, and moved north. Travel along Lake Erie would explain a move to Wisconsin. Or, he may have parted ways with a group from Ashtabula when he had enough money to buy land. The original group may have occupied land, but never purchased, or they may have lived in a river settlement, working on barges, steamboats, etc. If I went through this whole book, I could find out everyone who owned land in that county. I bet I would find a name you recognize through marriage.

I think the Howells are in my Mershon tree. I'll have to browse through my books to find them. The Howells must have had relation that came before them, to go straight to MO. Brigham Young began missionary trips to England in 1840. There isn't much mention of religiosity in the Mershon family, although the first recorded relative, Henri Merchand (1700's) was a French Huegenot.

Amos Collins is also interesting. My Elizabeth Collins first appears in the 1870 Census in Iowa. I have circumstantial evidence her husband William was born in 1830 VA. I think I originally said she was from Kentucky, but I was wrong...not sure where she came from. They all would have come through the Cumberland Gap. There are bunches of Collins' buying land in Ohio. It's interesting that Amos' mothers' name is Elizabeth.

I'm planning a roadtrip to that area sometime this summer. After I think this out for awhile, I may be able to connect this stuff. You've given me alot of possibilities! Do you have the name of Amos' siblings? I can do some searches for you while I'm there.

How long have you been researching? I'm a relative newbie, so please tell me where my thinkin' may be stinkin' :)

The length of my post...whoops! I did it again.

7. PMed you Brinton info, also...
As for the rest, I don't know much about our Eatons. My Eaton was a Lucinda who married and was having children in WI by the 1860's. I see now they made a stop in NE and then on to CA. Your Robert would be closer to the age of Lucinda's father, and I have no idea if he had siblings or not.

This is the family I think my Amos Collins belonged to:

Parents Henry Bennett Collins and Eliza Montgomery
Children:
Alvin M. Collins
Amos W. Collins
Benjamin M. Collins
Henry A. Collins
Alzina H. Collins
Angeline C. Collins
Laura E. Collins
Robert B. Collins
Margaret C. Collins
Spencer Collins
Monslin Collins

I don't know what kind of birth records, if any there may be for him. I believe his birthplace was Crawford Co, PA.

I've been interested in family history since I was a teen about 20 years ago, but I do it in spurts. I wish I had more time to devote, but it'll have to wait until my kids get bigger and I have more free time. I'm lucky that on my mom's side of the family, they've been in CA a long time and I'm close enough to visit many of the Gold Rush era cemetaries to find family graves.

Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 10:07 PM by woodsprite
My family (Davis's in Chester, PA) either lived there for awhile or lived next to it. I'm trying to track it down. My great aunt (who would have been a small girl at the time) said they actually lived there, but I can't imagine that.

Edited to add:

Also have Melson, Hetherington, Leager, Doud, Wilmer, and Canby. Somewhere along the line, I believe I have some Sharpless' in the mix also.

Benjamin Melson (1704) is my 6th great-grandfather
Elizabeth Melson (1817) is my 3rd great-grandmother
Jane Canby (about 1725) is my 5th great-grandmother

13. Hi sprite
Better late than never LOL. I have the Davis' in my line also. All those Quakers must have migrated together (if they're related). They all founded Vermont, Illinois. Sharpless is in their also.

I'm compiling stuff right now, to take part of a week over to Macomb, IL. I hate it that the genealogy is in its own building, and only open on Fridays, and Saturdays. I've gone over before, and stayed in a motel overnight.

This time I'm taking a tent, as I plan to have 3-4 days to do the cemeteries. I doubt if I'll have the money this year to do Chester :(

All this Quaker blood. No wonder we're Democrats! :)

is also in Chester. They are in my tree too. I found them in Vermont, Illinois, as well as the Sharpless'. Another variation is Davies. I'll look through my stuff, and see if I can find the connection. I've got a bunch of trees bookmarked.

Maybe you'll read this...maybe you won't. I haven't been keeping up very well.

11. Oh, what the heck.
In for a penny, in for a pound, right?

I'm only doing my paternal grandmother's branches of the family right now, as I have relatively little on them. Here are the names:

Beckett (sometimes written Becket or possibly Bickett). Emigrated from Ireland or England before 1858. Lived in Paterson, NJ, and Scranton, PA. May also have lived in NYC.

McCloskey (sometimes written McCluskey). Emigrated from Ireland or England prior to 1858. Lived in Paterson, NJ, and then Scranton, PA. May also have lived in Brooklyn.

Duggan (often written as Dugan). Emigrated from Ireland in 1864, landed in NYC, and went on to Scranton, PA. I suspect the family was from County Mayo, like many Scranton area immigrants, but this is not a certainty.

Devitt. Emigrated from Ireland in the 19th century. County of origin, port of arrival, and exact date unknown. Settled in Scranton, PA.

I've already found a few cousins online, so you never know...

You mentioned in a CA thread you are related to Streeters in the Lockeford, CA area. Are they related to the Modesto Streeter clan? Those Streeters are related to much of Stanislaus county, and I'm a distant cousin in there somewhere. :-)

EVERYBODY's part of the family, dear!

It's a honking HUGE family. Urbain Baudreau de Graveline was the patriarch. He came from France to Montreal in the 1600s. He had 8 children, and my branch descends from Jean, the youngest.

I'll look at my old newsletters from the Family Association and see how close you get to me.

They just said in the newsletter I received the other day that it will be the last one. They've kept it going for almost 30 years, and evidently the folks involved are mostly old, and they just don't have enough interest or time to keep it going anymore.

I'm so sad. I've been wanting to attend a meeting in Montreal the last 20 years or so, and something always came up I had to attend to instead.

Did you know there's actually a plaza in Montreal named after Urbain? I have a photo somewhere if you'd like to see it.

And there is a highway marker near Biloxi named after one of his descendants, who was a trapper/adventeurer. I have a photo of it too. It's quite a fascinating family!

What's really funny (not funny, haha- funny STRANGE) is that Urbain's father-in-law, Blaise, was attacked by Iroquois and scalped in the mid to late 1600s. And it was a common everyday hazard they had to live with there.

reprehensor's family is half Metis and full-blood Cree and Iroquois. His first Iroquois guy came from a settlement near where my family lived. We always joke that his ancestors were scalping my ancestors, but only because my ancestors were OPPRESSING his ancestors first.

I'll get back to you on your Francois.
:hi: cousin!
FSC

PS- Just out of curiosity-- did you get the Graveline nose? My mom has been to quite a few of the meetings, and says it's so funny to see all these people she had never met before walking around with the same nose-- rather large with a big ball at the tip. I managed to get one from the other side of the family. Not sure how. My mom has it.

You seem to be descended from a long line of head-bangers, going way back - at least in the eyes of the Iroquois, I should think.

Incidentally, FSC, I read from what seemed an authoritative source, that it was the pale-faces who started the scalping thang. So I suppose it's arguable that they would have just been returning the complement; a kind of robust spirit of integration.
