Ever found a cousin you wish you hadn't?
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 12:27 PM by fudge stripe cookays
Gah.

So I was very excited to find a cousin who lived in a very progressive state the other day, and had e-mailed him to find out if he's the correct one. (I had a letter from his dad that I got from another cousin in which the dad mentioned his son's name, and that he was a professor at this university) Well, he is the correct one, and he referred me to his daughter, who's the genealogist in the family.

However, he didn't provide her e-mail, so I still haven't been able to contact her. He sent me a second e-mail today with a little more info.

He used to work for a university there, and had his own Web page, so he referred me to it, telling me to check it out.

I looked a little while ago, and was appalled. More neoconservative/libertarian CRAP I've never seen spouted in my whole life (LIBERALS HATE GUNS! etc.). I literally felt sick to my stomach. He even ran for governor, and claimed the liberals had some sort of conspiracy against him.

I hope the daughter's a little better.

Ick. We are family, indeed. :eyes:

1. Actually, a half-great-granduncle...

He deserted from the Union Army during the Civil War (although I'm not certain he's the son of my great-great Grandfather).

BTW I found my great-great Grandfather's grave over the weekend:

How exciting! :bounce:

(on edit: name blurred because it's my surname)

2. Congratulations!
I'm feeling some of that same elation here.

Thanks to the amazing BlueStateGirl and her visits to home base in Garrett County, Maryland, I may finally get some information about my great grand aunt, for whom I've been searching for the last few years.

For some reason, she doesn't show up on the Maryland online deaths, and I'm beating my head against a brick wall looking for her. Well, I found her husband the other day (exactly where I thought he might be), so hopefully she's lying next to him.

BSG has even offered to go to the local library to look for his obit for me.

BSG, :yourock:!

3. Thank you, FSC!
I went to NJ over the weekend and it was very exciting to finally get my GG-grandfather & gg-Grandmother's birth date and death date (via their stone). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to procure any add'l info on John (my surname)'s parents at the Morristown Library's genealogy room (the main reason I went there). :(

4. Is there anything I can help you with?
Don't know if there might be something, but I can try. Godfrey has some great stuff online.

Let me know!

6. I feel your pain, FSC.
Many of us have squirmed through holiday dinners with relatives who rant about (choose the political, spiritual, or ideological topic of your choice).

However, in my case, thus far, I've been quite lucky with the cousins I've turned up. Two of them are definitely in the same camp as I am politically (one even worked for Paul Wellstone, God rest his soul), and the others haven't yet discussed their politics. My second cousin once removed, however, is active in human rights causes, so I suspect he's a progressive on some issues.

7. Whose saying is it, "Be careful what you wish;
you might get just get it!"? Maybe the Chinese.

9. He probably would've got along famously with my 3rd great-uncle...
who named one of his sons "Wilkes Booth". (Charming, eh?)
