This guy is my hero...
Was checking in at the rootsweb forum tonight. For some reason, I haven't been getting e-mails when someone replies to any of my posts, so I try to check in from time to time.

In the Smith forum, I ran across a post saying something like "Posted, Pictures of YOUR relatives"

http://fourkings.freeyellow.com

This guy goes around to antique stores, flea markets, EBay, etc, and buys identifiable copies of old photos, tintypes, and photo postcards, and posts them on his site.

I mean, Dead Fred and some of the others do it, but he buys these all himself. These aren't others being contributed.

I did this a few years ago in a fit of genealogy philanthropic goodwill, but was only able to buy a few at a time. I did get 4 or 5 to family or people who could use them. Which made me feel REALLY good. I can only imagine how much disposable income this guy has to keep doing this.

What a wonderful human being to reunite so many folks with their loved ones' gorgeous historical photos. Robert D. King. He's one of the good ones.

1. I've often thought of doing the same thing with photos I find at antique
store. I just haven't had the time and when I've had the time I haven't had the money.

Mr. King is definitely a hero.

2. Several years ago I received a package of photos
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 01:14 PM by Mr. McD
from a third cousin I met online. One was a picture of my grandmother when she was young. It was not dated but she looked to be aroung 18 so it would have been taken around 1890. I had the photo digitaly restored, it was in fairly bad shape.

Some of the photos are of people that I have no idea who they are. Mabye I will add them to my website, someone in the family tree may know who they are.

3. Try Dead Fred...
www.deadfred.com

Give as much info as you can about the photo; what family originally had possession of the photo, the photographer's name and city, and any ideas you have about who it might be (if any).

There have been some pretty amazing reunions of photos with their reightful owners there.

Also, find your home county for the photos if you can (enter the town and state name here, and it will give you the home county http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi)

It will give you a list of resources for that county. Sometimes the main rootsweb page for a county will have an unidentified photos page.

Good luck!
