I LOVE ebay! Ebay is my friend.

Thought you all might enjoy this story:

I found a book on ebay (Raue's Pathology and Therapeutics, 1867) that had been written by an old family friend. Dr. Raue was good friends with my g, g grandfather C. Hering, MD- both in Germany, and later when he emigrated to Phila area. They had breakfast together every morning. And, Dr. Raue's niece was like a sister to my grandmother. We called her Aunt Stina. And, we have many letters written btw. my grandmother and her, as well as pictures and a wonderful oil painting of her which was done by my grandmother. They loved and admired one another very much.

Anyway, this was a first edition signed by Raue himself. It was not in good shape however. And, the seller said that the inscription on the inside cover was written "Dear Jim Hering...etc. Well, this was odd to me as I had never heard of Jim Hering. In fact, after all of my genealogical work I was a bit put off by the fact that I had never heard of this Hering!!

Well, I bought it anyway. And, what to my wondrous eyes should appear?!... When it arrived I found that the seller had been mistaken!!! The inscription written by Raue was in fact, a note to my g, g grandfather!! :loveya:

It said: C. Hering, MD

Dear Sir, and Honorable Friend,

As a token of most grateful acknowledgment of your uniform friendship, so long enjoyed by me- and of my appreciation of your high attainments in science, and vast experience in practice, I would dedicate to you this fruit of my humble labor.

Yours, ever grateful, Raue
Philadelphia, Dec 3rd, 1867

(The seller had mistaken a C for a J and then 'Dear Sir' she read as 'Dear Jim')

I love ebay! And, I really think we are 'led' to find our family stuff, too!!

1. QF, that is SO COOL!
I have hoped to find a treasure from our family on there someday, but you really hit the jackpot!

This is indeed a find! And isn't it fascinating to think about its travels over the last 140 years??

Congratulations! :hi:
