Rather than trying to bring people into the fold, the entire Obama movement has been about identifying enemies, often on the slimmest of pretexts, and then purging and eliminating them. In this way it resembles a religious movement more than it does a political movement. The assumption among the "progressives" who are driving the Obama campaign is that the only way to broaden support for the party would be to "compromise with racists" or something. Of course they are more than willing to compromise on all of the traditional principles and ideals of the party - and strong stands on those principles and ideals would bring millions into the party without any pandering being needed - but they are not willing to compromise on matters of personal identification and style and fashion nor on just what sort of riff raff they are willing to rub elbows with.
We are seeing a spiritual and cultural movement - a relatively small number of upscale people with a certain set of cultural ideas, New Age notions, suburban and academic prejudices who are arrogant and bigoted, are seizing control of the party and forcing a showdown with the extreme right wingers on culture war issues - on the right wingers' playing field and playing by their rules. Unfortunately, they are taking all of us down with them.
