How do you feel about the Tina Fey
bitch routine?

I think she succeeded in getting a cheap laugh and giving everyone permission to call Hillary and other women bitches.

And my friends could tell you I have a great sense of humor....I just don't find calling Hillary and other women bitches funny.

1. I thought it was very funny
and took the power away from using the word as an insult.

2. I take your point, Black Velvet...
But I did think it was funny and its okay for a woman to use that word
to tap into her power. She didn't insult women, but gave them permission
to be powerful. If anyone knows this, it's Tina Fey who has had to struggle
to make and keep her television program 30 ROCK on the air...against all
odds.

Though she has moved on this year...my daughter championed Tina Fey at NBC and loves her. She hasn't weighed in on
this yet...but I'll let you know what she says.

4. I respect your right to see it differently....
I just personally think we are going to have people use it as justification to call Hillary a bitch.

6. Well, I thought it was funny and empowering, however, being male and
not in the habit of using the word, I might be missing something. I do know that it never even remotely occurred to me that I now had permission to use it, and I'm a career sailor that grew up swearing in the ghettos of NYC.

7. I must be missing something because I have no idea how
it is empowering to claim yourself as a bitch.

9. Because it gives the woman control of the word. If you embrace it,

it loses much of its power. Not saying it should be bandied about, of course. The word has a number of meanings, force people to contemplate the more pragmatically useful meanings, since you know for a fact that a certain segment of the population is going to be using it regardless of Tina Fey & SNL.

Edit: typos

8. I loved the clip one of few positive for Hillary. The word is very derogatory though. It has become
acceptable to use in our society for some reason. But I keep going back to what it means. And what that says about how they view women. We all know how they treat their dogs. It feeds right into the domestic violence you were speaking of.

13. i thought it was quite pro-hillary&women-in my
view she was saying, women have to try harder, they have a higher standard to meet-so stop bagging on hillary and tough women.

15. Yep.....
I knew it would. I'm sorry but I still don't think calling ourselves bitches is empowering....it's joining them because we couldn't beat them.

I like Tina Fey and think she's funny but I think this particular joke was a mistake.

16. Well, I do agree. My point was not that it is right to call someone else a
bitch, or to refer to yourself as one in a general sense - just that the word could be "turned around" if directed at you. I'd imagine that you feel differently, but the post asked for personal opinions, not final unassailable answers. Hope things go smoothly this week, I know it won't be easy.

and I understood your point and even agree to a point. I have referred to myself as a bitch at times.

18. None of this matters of course.
What matters is that Ms. Fey's peice is getting LOTS of attention. It was viewed over a million times yesterday... and is being written about all over the world.

Ellen DeGeneres has also jumped in in support of Hillary.

I think it's about time that feminists took off their self accepted air of "uncommitted" and jumped in to support Ms. Clinton. Before it's too late!

I applaud Ms. Fey and Ms. DeGeneres for doing that. (Geraldine Ferraro too!)
