A near-capacity crowd inside James A. Rhodes Athletic Center on the Shawnee State University campus did not lack for enthusiasm Monday, as former President Bill Clinton came to town stumping for his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, for the Democratic nomination in this year's election for president of the United States.
"Scioto County, look what I brought home with me," said Ohio first lady Frances Strickland, as she welcomed Clinton to the stage. "As governor of the state of Ohio, there is no one my husband would rather work with as president of the United States more than Hillary Clinton."
Assistant minority leader and state Rep. Todd Book, D-McDermott (89th District), said southern Ohio voters should rally behind Hillary Clinton on March 4, as they previously did behind Gov. Ted Strickland in his bid to become governor in 2006.
"You elected Ted Strickland here in southern Ohio, and you should do the same thing on March 4," Book said. "You made this Strickland country, and on March 4, you should make it Clinton country."
