Defending Obama's chairmanship: "He had other things on his mind."
On a call convened to attack Clinton's record on national security judgment, Obama aides found themselves defending the Illinois
Senator's short tenure on the subcommittee on Europe of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Aides said that he'd performed the required confirmation of appointees but, pressed further, had nothing to add. "The record is what it is. He didn’t become chairman of that subcommitte until January 2007," said foreign policy adviser Greg Craig. "He made his announcement for President of the United States in February 2007, so he had other things on his mind," he said.
The questions came amid a back and forth between two candidates, neither of whom has the sort of extensive foreign policy and military credentials John McCain will wield in the general election. McCain's attempt to holes in Obama's Senate record against him, however, may be blunted by the fact that McCain too has recently missed Senate business on the campaign trail.
