Wyoming at last is a Democratic player

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Not since 1960 have Wyoming Democrats felt so relevant.

That year, at the Democratic National Convention, the state's delegation cast 15 votes that pushed Sen. John F. Kennedy over the top and made him the party's nominee for president.

Only in the last few weeks have the campaigns stepped up their presence in the state, opening offices and calling voters and sending mailers. The first visits come Thursday, when former President Clinton makes three appearances. Obama and Hillary Clinton follow, each scheduling two events on Friday.

All the attention has Wyoming Democrats feeling giddy.

"It's amazing," said party spokesman Bill Luckett. "It's a once-in-a-generation type of opportunity for Wyoming to have a say in this presidential race."

The number of registered Democrats has grown by more than 1,000 since the start of the year, the secretary of state's office says. Republicans have 136,000 registered voters, compared to 59,000 Democrats.

LARAMIE -- "Wyoming, you led the nation with women's suffrage, you might as well lead the nation with the first woman president," former President Bill Clinton told the crows Thursday at a Hillary Clinton campaign rally.

The doors to the event at the University of Wyoming Sports Complex were set to open at 5 p.m. At 3:30, the line went nearly around the block.

Tyler Norton, a University of Wyoming student, was even willing to stand in line on his crutches.

"I want to hear what everyone has to say before I make a decision," he said, adding he was willing to stand in the cold with a broken leg to do so.

By about 4:45, when the public was allowed in, the line went all the way around the arena and down the street.

The University of Wyoming Sports Complex could only hold 1,200 people, and many were turned away.

From inside, the heads of a few of the people who were turned away appeared in the windows along the top of the arena, apparently hoping for a glimpse of the former president.

One UW student said he came to the speech an Obama supporter and left a Clinton supporter, but most seemed to want a bit more information before making a decision.

Women Supporting Hillary

To say this election has historical value is something we've been hearing for a while. But it especially rings true here in Wyoming with the possibility of electing the first ever woman president, and Wyoming knows a thing or two about firsts for women.

Wyoming was the first state to allow women to vote in 1890 and now 118 years later Wyoming is at the forefront of possibly putting the first woman in the oval office.

Senator Clinton's visit today at LCCC has drawn women from Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska who feel the former first lady speaks to them in a language they can understand, woman to woman...

Literally thousands of people lined up here to see the former first lady and hundreds of women who feel that they want her to represent them in the white house.

Hillary Clinton’s visit to Cheyenne, which began 45 minutes later than scheduled, occurred just before Wyoming’s 2008 Democratic Party Convention. Today, Wyoming’s 12 delegates will be awarded to Clinton or her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

A line snaked its way around the Laramie County Community College gymnasium hours before Clinton was scheduled to speak, not unlike a crowd that waited hours to see her husband and former president Bill Clinton in Laramie Thursday.

Clinton answered around 10 questions from a crowd of nearly 2,000 people, all sitting, standing or occupying bleachers in a circle around her.



“I would get us back to our fiscal responsibility,” Clinton said. “When my husband left office, we had a balanced budget and surplus.”

Because of the balanced budget and surplus, the Social Security trust fund was replenished and there was a plan in place for it to pay full benefits until 2055, she said.

“And look where we are today,” Clinton said.

Clinton said she has the solutions to the problems she sees in this country.

“I know there is difference between speeches and solutions,” Clinton said. “I want you to hold me accountable. I want to tell you what I will do with the economy, with energy, with health care and education and a wealth of other problems. I don’t think we have any time to waste.”
