4. This one is going to hurt.
You know - the reason I never liked Obama was because he reminds me of a preacher.
The way he talks, it drives me nuts. When I watch his campaign events on c-span, I walk around the the house saying "hallelujah".

Now I know where it's coming from.

As one of my favorite Bidenites called him - Popebama.

8. oh you're kidding
I could be wrong as I wasn't alive back then, but I don't recall MLK calling white people his enemies and using such hateful rhetoric.

Wright fits right in with Obama's campaign of "unity" and "hope". :eyes:

10. sorry if I was vague
I know what you meant. Sometimes in my attempts at writing short posts, I lose what I was really trying to say! I'm just a lazy typer (typist?). :silly:

Was this in the Wright Fan Club thread? If not, have you read that thread?

11. There have been several puff theads on Wright
Hard to keep track.

I don't even have a particular problem with Wright's comments --accept that I don't think it appropriate for a preacher to sermonize about a political candidate in support.
I do wonder at how Obama could listen to this man for 20 years without fundamentally agreeing with him.

I had a Rabbi once who was that divisive --and I quit that temple after a month.

12. there probably have been a number of them
I stay out of GDP unless a link is posted here or elsewhere. I'm too chicken to go in there.

I would agree with some of Wright's comments but I really think he goes overboard. I don't like the use of the word "enemy" at all. Especially in a sermon. I guess the church I was raised in was so completely different that such hateful sounding speech seems very wrong to me. I was raised Evangelical Lutheran, which is nothing like "the evangelicals". Sermons consisted of Norwegian jokes (because most of us were at least part Norwegian) and feel good stories and lots of laughs. If it was the fall, church let out early so everyone could get home to watch the Minnesota Vikings.

My church was very "live and let live." It's in a small town in ND and if someone died and didn't belong to a church or if Catholic was marrying a non-Catholic (for example), our church would do the funeral or the wedding or whatever. As my mom says of her church, "It doesn't matter if you are Presbyterian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, or pagan. We'll bury you." LOL! That sounds rather morbid.

Wright's committee

Jeremiah Wright, in the news today because video of a sermon (parts of which had been reported, and disavowed, before) adds some heat to the discussion of his relationship with Obama, has generally been described as connected to Obama only informally — a religious figure with whom Obama has said he disagrees at times, a kind of cranky uncle.

But he also has a formal role on the campaign.

Wright is a member of Obama's African American Religious Leadership Committee — the sort of largely honorary, advisory body that in recent days has recently been used mostly to throw people off who say controversial things.

The Obama campaign couldn't immediately say whether he'd remain on the committee.
