A Sermon’s Echoes Threaten Obama

News stories by ABC News and Fox News on the sermons of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s pastor at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, are creating a stir in blogland. ABC News leads with Wright saying, in 2003, “God damn America” (“for killing innocent people,” “for treating our citizens as less than human,” and “for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme”). Fox leads with a more recent sermon, from January, in support of Obama’s candidacy, and a Christmas sermon in which, Fox’s Jeff Goldblatt writes, “Wright tried to compare Obama’s upbringing to Jesus at the hands of the Romans.”

1. Let's hope the NYT runs it in the paper tomorrow or Saturday

Although having it on the blog is a good start. With CNN, ABC, Fox all running it along with Inside Edition on CBS I think it is only a matter of time before the dam breaks and this is all over the papers and nightly news. The only thing that may hold them back, ironically in light of Ferrarogate, is the fear of being labeled racist for running it.

2. What good was Oprah to Obama

except for publicity? You would have
thought she would have advised him to
put some distance between him and Wright
early on. She did early on when it became
quite evident he was controversial on race
issues. If I recall correctly, Oprah was
a member of his congregation at one time.
