With Winter Almost Over

when the season’s almost over?

The fog comes in
to hide the death of winter,
to ease it from our memory.

How winter fights for life
with one last snow,
then passes.

The mornings belong to the young,
the green, the warm.

With harvest in, before the fire,
maple and sumac leaves long fallen
in a blaze...

The fog returns to shroud
the birth of winter.
