upon.

who uses
the words
“nigger, raghead,

One time
is once
too many.

I write
so that
the
voices
in my
head
whisper
and
the screaming
stops;
(at least
for a
little while)

I write so
that the
voices
change
their tenor;
and
remind me
of the
joy
I once
knew.

I write
because
putting
a knife
in
someone’s
gut
is still
“not”
the thing
to do.

I have
to write;
‘cause
if I don’t;
too many
people
would pay.

I write

that I
do not
harm those
who are
in need
of a
good
ass-whipping.

It is
my way
of
treading
water.

don’t
sink in
the mud
of
hate
and
unloveliness
that
surrounds
me.

children know
