The Times They are not A’ Changin’ Ramon Piñero 6/14/03 It is almost too late, our children have been accustomed to immediate gratification, they gotta have it now.
They gotta have it now. Barbie, laptop, Big Mac with all the trimmins irradiated chunks of who knows what? followed by so-called potato sticks fried in hot grease-like poison and let’s not forget their little plastic toy, (included in their yahoo meal) which is also this weeks box-office blockbuster.
They cannot wait, gotta have it now, the world will end today if we don’t let them watch or eat what their friends will watch or eat.
The have no idea what the word “wait” means; “gotta have it now” is the mantra we taught them.
We made them that way, every time we say “yes” to their every whim.
We no longer know our children they have no sense of history
We forgot those who came before us. Who gave their lives, so that we may live our lives as proud men and women.
We forgot to tell them about Cesar, Malcolm, Albizu, those who did not seek the here and the now, they fought and died for the later and tomorrow for the future. But, they gotta have it now makes no difference what the cost may be. We have not taught them about those who paid the price; we have only encouraged their petulance
What it cost Anacaona Cualtemoc, Nat Turner Mandela, Malcolm and Martin. They have never heard those names.
They only know Nemo, and the Little Mermaid, Grand Theft Auto 3, Halo and Grand Prix,
They know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Then we wonder why they have no direction.
Let’s reclaim our history and prepare them for a glorious future.
