One thing that needs to be said...I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over twenty years; it is still one of the most progressive areas in the country, Schwarzenegger(sp?) has never been able to pull the area into his brand of politics, playing the outsider card. Having said that, I am a bit saddened that there is still entirely too much 'identity" politics being played out there; we end up quibbling over crumbs on the floor and ignore the feast at the table.
I had the good fortune of reading at two events; Poetry Express at Priya's in Berkeley, on San Pablo, if you have not had dinner there, you are missing out on a great dining experience (East Indian food.). The reading came off very well, there were two other poets on the bill, and I must say that their stuff was great; I was pleased to be in their company. Charles DuBois and Avotcja, local Bay Area great's.
Tuesday the 21st, it was off to Oakland to Poetry Diversified at the World Ground Cafe, great coffee and even greater locally brewed beer; that too came off much better than I expected.
It had been some time since I had read in a public venue, and it has left me with a thirst to do more. My reading style is not what is known as "Slam" style, I'm too "old school" for that type of reading. I believe that the "quiet" voice will ultimately carry the day. I don't think people want you to be yelling and screaming at each other, let Congress engage in that behaviour.
The poem I posted last night was written to a friend with whom I have had a crush on for the last twenty-five years; and she looks just as great now as she did then. I say "crush" since we were and are still married to other people, although I will always acknowledge my feelings.
I do believe that this trip will give birth to a few more poems..we shall see.
