My lord

why
did you give me this fledgling,
this new and singing soul with a
heart young and green—

why did you give him to me?
Why did you allow me
to know him and
teach and adore and to

taste
him.

Why did you allow me
to see how empty and hollow
everyone is.

How could you have though that this
pathetic heart of mine
this pathetic heart
that cannot even bear the strain of humanity
could somehow shelter

you
