Started smoking weed and alcohol cravings disappear
I used to smoke weed regularly over 10 years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I stopped smoking after a bad incident with a certain psychedelic drug, and didn't touch weed again until about a month ago. In the last 10 years I have progressively developed an abusive relationship with alcohol, and have been previously unsuccessful with trying to stop.

A few weeks ago I said "what the hell", got a bag, and commenced to smoking just to see how I would like it after all these years. In the time that I've been smoking I've never had more than 3 drinks in one day, and have no cravings for alcohol at all. I typically have one beer a day now. In the past before I started smoking, it was near impossible for me just to have 3 drinks. I would drink those and something inside me screams and claws at me to drink more. That feeling is totally gone now, it's fantastic.

It's only been a few weeks though, I guess the real test is seeing how this is working after 6 months - year. Another good thing is that weed is greatly reducing my anxiety and stress as well.

Does anyone else find that marijuana helps with alcohol abuse?

1. Marijuana did not help me with alcohol abuse.
For me, it was just trading highs, from being drunk to being high.

You may or may not find, that the decrease in cravings for alcohol may only be temporary. If you are a true alcoholic, using other drugs is not likely to make it go away, in fact, it may compound your problems.

I do hope you find what you need.

5. i guess you were successful getting off pot then?
:)

Yeah we are kind of reversed.....I don't like drinking more than a beer or two while smoking cause it messes up the effects of the marijuana. Everybody's different i guess :)

3. Yes It Helped My Alcohol Abuse
I always drank even more when I smoked pot!

I also tried to use pot and not drink. I tried to use it and just drink a few beers.

None of that ever worked for me. When I just smoked pot, I found that all I did was smoke pot and didn't really like it.

When I tried to just drink a few beers and smoke pot, I found that I always drank more than a few beers anyhow whether I smoked pot or not. I found that I was actually drinking as much or more.

The only thing that ever worked for me is putting the plug in the jug, going to meetings, reading the literature, not smoking pot, and not using anything that I've prescribed for myself.

Sorry I have no words of encouragement for your venture, except that if it works for you, then more power to ya!

:hi:

8. I have shuffled my addictions and it didn't work for me long term.
I smoked pot to ease cravings for more serious drugs. It worked for the short term and in the short term I felt better. Long term I still bottomed out and ended up in AA, which has turned out to be a huge blessing.

If you can use the pot to get off the alcohol and then get off daily use of the pot, great. This is just a personal observation here, but long term pot users are some of the saddest cases.

I hadn't talked to my best friend from high school for almost 15 years. We reconnected over the holidays. She has been smoking pot the entire time and it is like her life has been in suspended animation. She is doing exactly the same things she was doing 15 years ago  No growth, no change. She goes to her shitty job and then comes home to her shitty room and smokes pot. She is 40. She is really smart and one of the most artistically talented people I know, too. Her mother was a falling down alcoholic and so is her sister, so she thinks because she doesn't blackout, etc, she is doing fine.

Not that that is where you are headed, but be careful, 'k?

9. Weed helps me with my vicodin addiction
At the risk of ruffling some feathers - I agree with you - Marijuana is a wonder drug.

The only problem is you run the risk of developing a psychological compulsive habit of then smoking weed. Pot will only get you so high, and then your body stops processing it. The good news is you'll never OD, the bad news is if you develop this habit it will cost a lot of money with no high. If you end up smoking and smoking, and can't tell if you're high or not, time to back off. More good news - backing off pot is simple. And you can enjoy pot more if you go a few days without.

Good luck!

11. Yes, marijuana helped with my alcohol abuse, definitely
It would mitigate my buzz, so that I could drink even more than when I was not getting high, so it definitely helped me abuse more alcohol than I otherwise would have been able to.
