When someone one gets mad at you (because another person breaks your confidences by spamming your pm's around the lounge after they'd represented themselves as a friend and promised confidentiality), and sends out a press release making all kinds of false accusations to a bunch of people, and those people believe it without question, and put you on ignore and pm block, or refuse to respond to your pm's and posts, repeatedly, without ever asking for your side of the story or even asking if any of the things that have been said are even true (helpful hint: they aren't), well, that to me is pretty mindless and cult-like behavior. And I'm talking about an awful lot of people, here. So, yes, I think I'm in a cult too, sometimes. But it isn't AA.

Over the past few months I've been brought to tears several times just thinking about my gratitude for AA and the incredible blessing I received at 23 years old when I got myself to a meeting for the first time. It made me sober enough to understand that my integrity is worth more than any inane online popularity contest being held by adults acting like children. It has helped me tread carefully through this situation. It taught me what it means to keep my side of the street clean, no matter what, even if it means having to put up with a lot of garbage and walk away from arguments that I can't bring myself to participate in because to dignify this behavior with a response is beneath me...somewhere along this path I have acquired some dignity; I sure didn't walk into AA with any. I wouldn't change any of this that has happened over the past few months for anything, because it has brought me incredible gratitude for AA and what I learned there, from working the steps and doing service, etc. I was stagnant and breathed life back into my program.

I'm free-associating in this thread, just using it as a kind of vent, but it's so amusing for people in the DU Lounge to refer to AA as a cult because of what I have been through and the fact that the lounge functions at intervals both like AA and like a cult. Roflmao. Whatever. I feel people in those discussions basically are scared to death of the 9th step; I know I was.

Yep, there's a thin line between fear/hate, sometimes.

I always found that the people who turned against me
when I got sober( and there were only a few) were the
most threatened by AA= they had a problem themselves, and my being
sober threatened that.

My real friends were overjoyed that I had joined.
They knew I was going to kill myself and maybe
others ( drunk driving) if I didn't stop drinking.

But hey-

We're a Cult, damnit!!
