Am I allowed to post in here when I have an addiction to something that is
neither drugs, alcohol nor sex? But something that does have a power over me that I cannot shake?

2. Hi sweetie.
Since you're in here, I'm assuming that you have or had your own private battles? If so, how is it going?

3. I am well and in recovery.
I am an alcoholic and drug addict, but man oh man, my addiction is tricky and finds other places in my life to manifest itself in.

4. Well - I must say that I do like my wine.
Don't have it every day and some weeks can go by without having a glass. But, when I do start, I really like that little buzz that come with it. The addiction that has me concerned now is something that just has a hold over me and I think about it every day and even plan my day around it. I've quit smoking (over 20 yrs) ago, but this one seems to have just as great a hold over me that smoking did.

I'm glad that you are well and in recovery. What have you done to replace those things that you gave up?

6. I sobered up almost 23 years ago
I was a young 'un.

At that time, I basically changed friends, started going to meetings, and began to make healthier choices for myself.

I still go to about 1 meeting a week, and some days I still battle with the healthy choices. Granted I do not have urges to use alcohol or drugs per se, but, sometimes I do not want to make the healthiest choices.

8. why are you blushing?

as for what I did to 'replace' my addiction, I just had to change pretty much everything and everybody

sounds drastic, I know. but I had to kinda make a clean break and start over.

9. I think if you are addicted
and trying to stop you qualify. I went to NA for a while exclusive of all the other A programs just because you can walk into NA and say 'my name is _______ and I am an addict' with no qualifiers. I have found the twelve steps helpful in my recovery from all kinds of stuff but there are many other ways, just admitting loss of control is the first step. :hi:

We all have our demons to overcome. Mine was alcohol, but YMMV.

12. Natch.
My opinion is that this is a DU forum, that talks about addiction/recovery. You need support? you got it.

I recently decided to start posting over here more often myself. Glad to see you.

13. Welcome, Bullwinkle.

You summed it up with
"something that does have a power over me that I cannot shake".

That describes any addiction and you can find understanding, like minded souls
here, who have all gone through the throes of addiction.

I once heard

" it doesn't matter the color of the rock you use
to hit yourself in the head with".

meaning--- we're all in this together.

if you are here to post about recovery from an addiction, then by all means do.
