The husband of my cousin was killed last Sunday night in a traffic accident where he was riding his motorcycle. (He was wearing a helmut and driving carefully.) (He was 59, two weeeks short of his 60th birthday.) He was one amazing man.
Aside from his humanity, compassion, and sense of humor, he had guts and courage that still leaves me in awe of him.
When he died, he had just left the hospital where he attended an NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meeting. He was .9 mile from the meeting. He has (had) been clean for 15 years and still tried not to miss a single meeting. Steve didn't brag about his recovery; as a matter of fact, his brothers found out about it during the visitation at the funeral home. But it was part of his character.
He met my cousin at one of these meetings, they fell in love, and married six years ago.
And a shout-out goes to my cousin. I heard her telling an NA member that she'll be going to a meeting tonight (the day after the funeral).
To all the DU-ers who are in recovery, who have their challenges via recovery, and/or who love people who are in recovery, I give you a very special shout-out in memory of Steve. You have my utmost respect.
