Oh God, I'm a sponsor now.
After the meeting last night, one of the other members stopped me on the way to my car and asked if I would be his sponsor. It really took me by surprise, because I have the distinct feeling that I don't know what the hell I'm doing...just trying to do the next right thing like everyone else. Also, he's at least twice my age (I'm only 24). I'm definitely not used to my elders asking me for guidance.

But I agreed. I've worked the steps through a couple times, and am still working them. I've also got some good sobriety under my belt, and my sponsor feels that I would make a good sponsor. So I said yes. I already do some telesponsoring for people who live in countries where there are no meetings (apparently, there are no sex addicts in Sweden or Taiwan) - but this is my first real live sponsee.

I guess if you pray, pray for me. I'll need all the help I can get.

1. heh
that'll keep you busy

and it's just what you need

just two things, if I may?

you can't keep him 'sober' and you can't get him to use.

and don't teach 'theory' stick to your own experience, share what YOU did and you can't go wrong.

:highfive:

you'll do great and there's no better way to learn as to teach it to another

2. Being a sponsor is a growing experience for all of us in recovery.
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 10:53 AM by Old Broad
I have seen some pretty unusual sponsor relationships in the program. Many years ago, I lived
in VA in a very wealthy part of horse country. There was a guy who came to the program after
being sent there kicking and screaming by the court. He was the most proto typical wasp you
every saw. He was snooty, too good for the rest of us and generally critical of the rest of
us who needed meetings to get better.

But for some reason he stayed. He kept coming to meetings and listening. AFter about six months
he asked Richard to be his sponsor. Richard was African American and the janitor at the local bank. He was illiterate
so the only way he he could understand the program was to listen to the big book and the twelve
and twelve on tape. But Richard really got the program and had the most beautiful sobriety.

After sticking with the program and Richard for a couple of years, this guy also developed into
one of the most sober, caring human beings that I ever met.

Your new sponsee must have seen something in you that he felt he wanted. You are honest and
willing to change. You'll do great.

5. Good for you!! You should be proud!
It's an honor that someone sees you as a mentor, and approached you. My only advice would be to stick to what you know through the program, and stay in touch with your own sponsor--but you knew all that!

And yes, I'll pray for you!
