Hi. I'm a drunk
I wish I could tell you that I'm something fancy like an alcoholic. But I'm not. I'm a drunk. I'm holding hands with you, w8liftinglady. I'm not even 4 hours dry. I'm struggling.

Will anyone meet me here tomorrow at 4:00? That's when my shakes start. It's got to stop.

I don't understand. Being a drunk is being in such a dark place. Why do I insist on staying?

4. I may not be here at 4 tomorrow, but I will be thinking good thoughts for you.

Get in touch with the AA people in NOLA, having face to face support is so helpful in recovery.

5. AZ Dem. and KitchenWitch gave you some
great advice- call the 24 hour NOLA AA hotline.

They know what you are going through and can
direct you to good meetings in your area.

If I'm home by 4 PM, I'll check in to see how you are.

7. Wow. Made it.
It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. I ate an entire thing of cookie dough. But I made it. I thought the 4:00 hour would be the hardest because that's when I usually start drinking. But it was actually the morning hours that were the worst. I usually buy around 10:30 or 11:00, and it was so hard not to do it. The "it-won't-hurt-just-to-have-it-around" and "just-because-it's-here-doesn't-mean-I'll drink-it" thoughts kept coming up. More tomorrow.

9. Instead of cookie dough
try honey.
Its an old-timers trick that helps get one through the detox part of sobering up.

Also,if you overdo the cookie dough now you will be sick and tired of it when you really need it down the road.

10. Sorry to be responding late.....
But girl, I have been where you are so many times. I do not ever want to be "that woman" again. Who is "that woman?" Well, she's a drunk, but let me describe her to you, and pardon the blunt terms. Real is real.

As most on this board know, "that woman" is one who lies to her husband about her drinking, sneaks swallows of the cooking wine when desperate, and pukes in the sink while simultaneously pissing on herself on a "bad" morning (a "good" morning used to be simply puking in the sink). She is a Social Drinker, but if her colleagues in her professional life knew how deep her problem was, or how many times she had missed work due to a "stomach bug" because she was too hungover to get out of bed, she would be fired.

It all got to be too much. I found myself looking at the possibility of losing it all -- marriage, child, career. That did not happen, by the grace of whatever higher power you grasp on a given day, and by the efforts of the members of this board. AZDem talked me off a cliff a time or two by cell phone. (Thanks again!)

And I made it to where I am now. Sober. Morning by morning by morning. Moment by moment. Not in perfection, by any stretch.

You can achieve sobriety today. I have learned not to look into the future. I am sober today. That is enough.

Much love.

MBD
