Anyone else living through "W" sober? I am. Since Sept 1998 -

1. Yes, although having W in the white house

makes it a bit difficult now and then.

Actually, the truth is, that taking a drink is not even in my list of options anymore. You know what I mean? Like when something bad happens and you have to make choices? Getting drunk doesn't even come up anymore.

I got sober right before Reagan's first term!

There are not enough republican administrations in the world that could make me take a drink.

But it sure does tend to cause outrage burnout for this fellow traveller.

5. I just quit all recreational drug use 6 days ago

Alcohol and marijuana were the biggies. It's not terribly difficult, but everyday I have to remind myself all the reasons why I quit. That (so far) has kept me from using.

It was a quiet and sober Christmas, which is always a good thing. My dad is sober too, but he has long since left his senses (he is a Rush loving, Faux Snooze believing bushbot).

Got into a semi political discussion about the movie Munich, and he basically said that Spielberg is weak on terrorism...I said that I disagreed with how the US has handled it. His answer was "we haven't been attacked, since 9/11". I responded by saying that our way was engendering a lot of hatred of the US.

My dad, I am afraid, will never get it. He was a liberal (left of freaking Hubert H Humphrey) Democrat when he was drinking. When he got sober he decide to become a fundie born again and a RW rethug. It is not pretty. And he has the charming attribute of always having to be right and to have the last word.

I try to declare a politics free zone around me when I am around him.

Sometimes I did it one minute at a time.

I got sober on April 7, 2000. Sometimes I think that w has helped me stay sober. He certainly has taken my mind off drinking!

27. Admitedly, it is tough living through the reign of W while sober.

Rage is not good for any recovering alcoholic or any other addiction.
Those feelings of murderous anger and helplessness are too familiar
for many of us in the program.

It has made me appreciate how fragile sobriety is sometimes. I have
been sober since 1-2-81 and still struggle with these feelings.
But I love the steps and just end up using them more than usual.
My recovery tool box has been well worn during this administration.

Yes, I'm a recovering alcoholic who is seriously challenged in the kitchen.
My sobriety has not increased my desire for domesticity one bit.

I like to read cookbooks, but that is about as far as it goes. I imagine
all the wonderous things I should be making for my husband. yeah, right.

30. the program taught me to love my kitchen

for years and years in and out of recovery I moaned and bitched and complained about cooking and the cleanup and the shopping etc etc etc

finally I realized I would have to eat for the rest of my life and that with my dear Mr. Ketchup as a spouse it was either takeout windows or I'd have to cook

so I got a new pair of glasses ya know? I made cooking my hobby, my challenge, my zen...

I'm still no great cook, but it's more fun and sometimes I have moments of genius and Mr. Ketchup cheerfully dries the dishes every night

Got sober in 1990, at a very rough fellowship hall, and learned early on that there are only excuses, no reasons to use. Too much death and destruction.
I wouldn't get drunk over bush. Blech.
Funny thing-- my sobiety friends-- many have a near Zen appoach to politics. No one really likes bush, of course, but involvement or passion is minimal, except for a few. But those few are very involved.

I always go to meetings. I have a couple of hard core "first step" meetings I go to that are refreshing. As well as my homegroup, which is a little more touchy feely, which I'm not, but they love me anyway.
