The Lord's Prayer
as explained by Emmett Fox (Dr. Bob's favorite spiritual writer)

saved me in early recovery, might be worth a read for anyone who's interested

1. This is very nice, NMDem!
I love getting the long versions of prayers and reading more
about the words that make up prayers.

This helps me, too.

Thanks, Sweetie!

:) :hi:

2. Thanks for keeping me up past my bedtime!
:P

Can't say that I agree 100% with every little thing but I did enjoy it and I should probably focus on the things that rang true for me rather than nitpick the rest (especially since I could be mistaken in my opinion). Just like everything else in life.

Thanks for the link!

3. Offensive
That's what I find people who shove their version of a higher power down the throat of others.

It's intolerant and divisive.

Keep your Jesus and your prayer.

Don't need either.

4. first of all, I'm no Christian
2ndly, how in the world did you get my innocuous post that was probably on page two by now "shoving ... it down the throat of others"

I shared a writing I read in early recovery that helped my comfort level in meetings that use the prayer. I don't advocate any religion (since I don't belong to any) nor do I speak of Jesus within the recovery community.

Take offense if you will, but it's your issues on parade, not mine.

Peace

:hippie:

PS, I'd like to recommend to you the Herbert Spencer quote in the Big Book in appendix II

5. Also a nice, leather-bound copy of the Gospels, Pecos. Perhaps, Citizen_Penn

thinks believing Christians and other hatefully insensitive types should start a thread of their own on this theme?

6. I don't know about the Gospels Joe, since I never read them
and perhaps the discussion of them would be better suited for the Religion forum.

I can only share MY experience and I do know the prayers in meetings made me VERY uncomfortable in those early days until I read Foxx.

It didn't 'convert' me to Christianity but it did help my understanding of what prayer was (or was supposed to be). I think.

I'm still not real sure on that issue, but at least I don't squirm in my seat any more

7. You're the one we all look up to, here, for the right insights in conflictual situations,

Pecos; so I'm more than happy to defer to your wisdom.

I'd really recommend you read the Gospels, though, because, unsurprisingly, Christ was so unique, but I suspect you can reach out to many more people in need of encouragement, "as is", so to speak. So, maybe, you have a treat in store for some more distant "rainy day".
