My doctor is talking about putting me on pills...
Edited on Sat May-06-06 04:02 PM by benburch
Both Xenical and Meridia.

Anybody here have experience with the combination?

And yes, this would be closely monitored!

I've been dieting for three years now, and pretty much plateaued, and still have #70 to lose.

And I do NOT want to risk gastric surgery. I know somebody who nearly died of that.

Anyway, I have the blood work Monday and the physical the following week, so I am hoping some of you respond before then.

Thanks!

1. I honestly don't know anything about the pills...
but it seems to me working with a trainer to change your exercise routine (I don't know if you already do this, so my apologies if so) and tweaking your diet would help jump-start your weight loss.

If you really need to lose 70 pounds, there is little reason for you to truly plateau. Your body has probably just gotten used to whatever you have been doing until now. What kind of nutrition plan are you following?

2. I have tried both
and failed at losing weight with them. Xenical = oily diahrea, Meridia raised my blood pressure and didn't do anything to help with weight loss at all. With Xenical you can lose so much of your body's nutrition, and quickly too.

As far as gastric bypass surgery goes, they are not all the same. I've had tremendous success as have many other people. Depends on what surgery a person opts for. It should NEVER be considered without a LOT of research.

Personally, I wouldn't waste money on either of the two drugs you mention.

10. I received my approval letter yesterday for my roux-en-y
I know the benefits and risks associated with it.I'm lucky, because my insurance will pay for 80% of it.Being fat gets old.I've dieted since I was 12 year old.I'm 46 now.

3. Before you try the pills...

have you tried Bill Phillips' Body for Life program? My husband has been on it for years and I've been on it in the past and just re-started this week. It feels great! I can't believe I waited so long to get back into it. Our experience has been that it's safe and remarkably effective when done correctly. I would stress that last part of the sentence, because there's weight lifting involved and you can get hurt if you perform an exercise incorrectly or if you start with weights that are too heavy for you. The program is designed to help you lose fat and increase muscle tone, and it teaches you to eat very healthy meals. You eat 6 times a day on this plan, so you're never hungry. I don't use any of the supplements (and don't plan to), but I do use the Myoplex Lite for some meal replacements.

Sorry if this sounds like a commercial, but I really love this program.

Edit: Myoplex (or Myoplex Lite for women) is much less expensive at this website than at some of the other places that I've checked.

11. I think I've hit the jackpot on this one. I looked up the Body for Life
that you suggested, and right off the bat, it looks like something I will give a real try. I bookmarked it and will look at it in more detail later when I leave DU. Thanks for posting.

4. My two cents
I'm not going for the gastric bypass because of money. With my health plan I have right now, it would end up costing me 12,000 out of pocket.

I've used Xenical with Weight Watchers. It's a boost, not a free pass to forget about portion control. So, instead of losing 1 pound a week, you lose two. Also,at a $165 a bottle, can get expensive. I also(look away if this is TMI)...you have to eat low fat or you will get more than oily stools, you will leak out oil. Wear a pad.

And, of course, after I went off the Xenical and started slacking on the Weight Watchers, it all came back.

Good Luck!

5. Have you decided what you're going to do about
the pills? I was just wondering if you'd researched them any more :)

6. We're doing only the Xenical.
That seems to be the safest approach.

it won't mess with your metabolism or your heart rate. (it might mess with your underwear though)

:yoiks:

Seriously though, let us know how it's working for you. Best of luck with it!

9. I have used every diet pill known to man
Meridia did not work for me.I really saw no appreciable change in my appetite.Xenical-you have to be really careful-especially in social situations, because you will literally sh*t yourself. My best success was with Phen-fen.I develop a tolerance to phentermine alone, and have to stay away from it,because it is physically addictive.Good luck with meridia.from what i hear anecdotally, men tend to do better because they don't have the hormone fluctuations that women have.
