I recently had gastric bypass surgery
And would like to know of any others here that have had the surgery and how you are doing. I had my surgery on March 31, 2008 and am down 44 lbs. So far I haven't had any major problems, but I am having trouble with the protein. The supplements are making me sick.

1. Hi HersheyGirl! First of all...

welcome to the group.
What 'gastric bypass' surgery did you have?

What sort of supplements are you taking? I'm not sure why they should be making you sick. When you say supplements are you talking about protein shakes or actual vitamin supplement pills?

I had surgery in March of 2005. I am down 168lbs and quite happy with that loss. :)
I did have some complications in the first year. I too had trouble getting in my protein and water and suffered from malnutrition hence I needed to be hospitalized and fed intravenously. I spent a couple of weeks on 'total parenteral nutrition (TPN)' Not fun at all.

Are you having your lab work done religiously?

Please take a look at a previous thread of mine. It will give you an idea of what I went through.

2. Going on 11 years post op here
Hiya ...

I had my surgery in Dec 1997 (before it was widely known) and it's been, unquestionably, the best thing I've ever done for myself. My high was 285, low post op was 168. I try to stay in the 180 range but it's not been easy because even though I can't eat a whole lot at one time, I can graze into oblivion. However, this is a hell of a lot better than where I was.

Congrats on doing well. The first year is, IMO, the hardest. Eat what you can, when you can, stay off of sugar if you aren't already - I was 6 mos sugar free and went back into it and blam! That was not a good thing.

Email me at bexley at gmail dot com and I'll be happy to share more info with you if you'd like.

Lisa

3. My daughter had it a few years ago.
She lost 200 pounds, but she is starting to put it back on. Eventually, your stomach stretches out again.

4. I had weight loss surgery and not all surgeries are alike.
I cannot agree with you that "eventually your stomach stretches out again". 2/3 of my stomach was removed. I didn't have it stapled. It cannot grow back or stretch. I expect to regain somewhere around 10% of what I lost. No big deal. I'm curious to know what surgery your daughter had.

thanks
