I'm So-o-o-o-o-o Hungry!
First day of the first serious attempt to lose weight in 25 years and I think someone is going to have to lock me in a closet or something. At the rate I'm eating my daily calories I'll be done with dinner about 3 p.m. Any tips for keeping the hunger monster under control?

1. water.
Drink lots of water throughout the day. Eat smaller portions many times in the day. Snacks, a few low calorie snacks. Nuts, dried fruits, celery, carrots etc are good too.

Don't make it so that you feel deprived. Do NOT starve yourself your body will react by storing up the fat and you won't lose weight.

good luck :)

2. Good ideas. I remembered I had a low calorie cookbook
with great 100 calorie bran muffins. Tomorrow I'll get some buttermilk and make a batch. That would be a filling snack in the afternoon.

3. Fiber helps a lot.
Oatmeal and a bread like Nature's Own Double Fiber Wheat Bread, an orange, ten or so raw almonds for a snack. I have to make sure I eat enough calories for breakfast so I don't eat everything in sight at suppertime. I've never dieted in my life until this year. It's tough, especially until you figure out what you can still eat that you like to eat. Don't beat up on yourself if you have a rough morning or day.

4. Thanks for the encouragement. This morning is better.
I know that if I can get past the first 3 or 4 days I'll be okay. When I'm about to break and need something STAT, I'm never sure if I should grab fiber or protein. Yesterday I scarfed 75 calories worth of cheese midafternoon and some celery.

5. That was a pretty good choice.
Celery and tuna would be a good snack, too, with fiber and protein. Only about 1 tablespoon of mayo with the tuna, though. It all gets easier as you discover what you can eat. If you were used to eating anything you wanted like I was, it's going to take a bit of time to retrain yourself to shop, cook and eat differently.

6. Grapes and unsweetened applesauce has been how I beat hunger. Water
helps too. Too often we mistake thirst for hunger.

Edamame is a good low fat snack. Boil it a few minutes, add a bit of salt or salt substitute, and use it for your TV snack. It's very satisfying.

7. I discovered clementines only have 23 calories, so I'm keeping them handy.
I've managed to get through a month eating about 1200 calories. Since I'm not weighing myself, I don't know how much I've lost, but my pants are a little looser. For some strange reason, other than the Dove chocolate incident, I haven't been tempted to go off schedule at all.

8. I found this at Cooks.com
HIGH FIBER 50 CALORIE BRAN MUFFINS
Printed from COOKS.COM
1 c. whole wheat flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. all bran
1/2 c. raisins; optional
1 egg
1/2 c. honey
3/4 c. skim milk
2 tbsp. safflower oil
Mix together dry ingredients, moisten with egg, honey, milk, and oil. Stir only to blend.
Place one-ounce scoops of mixture into well greased muffin tins. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Makes 15 (not 12). This is important for calorie count.

is this your muffin recipe?

9. the hunger gets better eventualy.
I think it has something to do with what your body is used to getting, and reacting when it doesn't get it. Your usual insulin level is there, but the food isn't, so you feel hungrier. It will adapt. I think this is the source of the sensation of feeling like your stomach has to "shrink". It's really just that your insulin level drops down to match the lower amount of food.
