Off topic, invitation.
Are any of you close enough to NYC to come for a dinner party? I'm going to host one.

I know a bunch of people from the lounge who will almost certainly be there, and a few people from GD. I would love to meet people from here in the Feminism Forum.

:)

3. If you're having it in October, maybe
I'll be on the East Coast then. Otherwise, I'm sorry I can't be there but I'm sure it'll be a lovely evening full of lively and intelligent conversation.

6. Perhaps someone in the heartland should host a meetup
at some point that we can all travel to attend. Someplace central.

I don't travel very easily, but I'd figure out a way to get there to meet a bunch of you. :)

7. I'm scared of strangers :(
I'm pretty close (SE MA, about 3 hrs in easy traffic) but I really have a hard time meeting with people I talk to online. I've done it a couple of times and I'm still alive lol, but it makes me intensely nervous.

8. I'm sorry.
I would enjoy meeting you at some point, but I understand how it could be nerve-wracking.

One person will be coming down from upstate NY, one person from Ohio, and two people from Connecticut. Two people who I have never met off-line may be staying in my home. One of them overnight, and one all weekend. I'm going to be dancing all weekend to accomodate people and make sure everyone's as comfortable as I can manage.

If you change your mind, you're definitely welcome. :)

19. Thanks :)
My best friend actually lives in Brooklyn, so it's not so impossible... I just know myself, and as fantastic as you are, I sincerely doubt I would be able to summon up the guts to show up :(.

It's definitely not a personal thing at all.

13. the only problem I have with doing it
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 09:43 AM by iverglas
is that it's usually not nearly as much fun as talking to them on line. ;)

I was lucky with the co-vivant, whom I met on line. He couldn't believe I was even funnier in person than on the monitor. I was pleased to find he was a little more counterculture than I'd expected from an office equipment salesguy, although he had won me at the beginning by responding to my somewhat brusque reply to his contact -- that he should tell me his thoughts about Kosovo and I'd let him know -- with an 8-email series. And, granted, he was a rock musician in his first life. And very funny.

I met one of my favourite and wittiest DUers for dinner and drinks when he was in Montreal and we went on a weekend jaunt to meet up with him. Majorly more boring in person than on line. Met several people I'd known on line for some years on a trip to the southern US a few years ago, with mixed results. We're all just so much more ordinary than we seem in the online mirror!

So Thom! -- I'd be happy to drop by and bore you. But sadly, I've let my passport expire ...

Should anyone ever be heading to central Canada (I won't tell you where I am unless you tell me where you're going, but anywhere in the Montreal-Toronto corridor would do for dinner, depending on schedules, since I can easily have occasion to be anywhere in that vicinity, and if you hit the right place you get bed and breakfast), don't hesitate to angle for an invite!

well that was an incoherent paragraph up there ... so I've fixed it

15. what ...

You don't want to visit Montreal in January??

I went to Winnipeg in February once. That was enough.

Let me know your dates, and I'll be there. One can't visit Montreal enough, and one definitely doesn't at this end. The co-vivant lived there a while, and I have a brother there. Used to go all the time on business, just don't get out of the house much these days ...

17. I once was in Montreal in early March
I grew up in the mountains of Vermont so I'm used to cold, but I don't remember ever being as cold as I was on that trip. BRRRRRRRRRR

20. Indeed - I am better on paper than I am on first physical impression.
I have a bit of shy streak. It's short lived with new people, but it is intensely annoying and keeps me from being "me" so to speak.

I'm getting over it as I get older, but it still makes meetings with new people difficult (especially new people I've already talked extensively with online).

11. I sure wish I lived close.
I would be there in a heartbeat if I did. Most of my (very large) family live near and around you - in Ct, NH, Mass, RI - but I'm in So Cal.

ThomCat, I would honestly love the chance to meet you in person.

12. I don't know that you'd want to trade SoCal for this region again.
But it would have been very cool if were visiting the area again. :(

I'd love a chance to hang out and talk with you over some good food. :)
