"Love Me, Love My Doll" on BBC TV
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 08:06 AM by Sparkly
Has anyone else here seen this documentary? I saw it last night and couldn't pick my jaw up off the floor. :wow:

It's about men who form "relationships" with life-sized dolls. One guy refers to them as "synthetic humans," as opposed to "organic women."

It disturbed me on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin. Some scenes show the dolls being treated as people, which is frightening enough (one guy said he loves their "stoicism") -- silent, mindless, painted-perfect women. Raises the question of whether that is an ideal for (how many) men? Other times, they're treated just as objects, left lying around, or hanging from ceilings by chains, or lined up in a factory -- and it's equally upsetting to see realistic-looking women's body parts just tossed casually around like that, even knowing they're inanimate. Many times, I got the feeling the guys were sort of playing with dead bodies and wondered whether this fetish is at all related to necrophilia.

The documentary didn't present viewpoint, analysis, or any real commentary -- just presented the information and left it there. It did leave me longing for a psychiatric explanation or some expert to tell me it was rare, or something else reassuring.

:scared:

1. Longing for a psychiatric explanation here, too.
Jesus Christ.

3. I imagine several people could make a career doing
some psychological and sociological reasearch about this, and publishing the results. x(

2. Well, on the bright side, if there is one
At least they are confining their creepy behavior to imitation women.

4. Yes, but you have to wonder what behavior
they are inflicting upon women too. :(

5. Eww
That is messed up. At first it reminded me of that twilight zone episode where the guy on the prison planet fell in love with his female robot, but then I remembered she was allowed a personality.

Then I was thinking about this guy from Alaska I know who got arrested for filling up a "blow up" doll with helium and tying it to the back of his motorcycle. It's a funny story when you hear it, but the whole concept of love "dolls" is creepy. I also know a guy who sent a blow up sheep to his nephew in Iraq as a joke. Who in hell thinks up this shit?

The next thing that this reminded me of is a program I had to watch in nursing school about treatment for pedophiles. One of the therapies was taking dolls and reenacting what they did. They show didn't show much more than a guy stroking a child sized dolls hair, and MY hair was standing up on the back of my neck. I don't know if they still do that for treatment.

6. I saw that a while ago
It says a lot about "the ideal woman" I guess - both emotionally (there to serve, with no emotional needs of their own), and physically (purchasing body parts off a menu).

7. Ever watch Real Sex on HBO...?
They had a segment where a young woman purchased a life size doll (with some realistic feeling parts) :scared: for her boyfriend.

The show featured the factory that makes the doll, what they are made of, how created, etc. The creator said he initially was making them as art--had no idea anyone would ever want to buy them and use them they way they do.

Get this--the young woman that purchased it for her bf--well, when she gave it to him they proceeded to have a three way with the doll! :wow:

I don't know if that matches the yuckiness factor of what you saw Sparkly,(I don't think it does honestly) but I was sincerely confused and grossed out by that segment.

8. No, I just got Verizon and never even had these channels before!
I don't have HBO, though.

Sounds like the same kind of thing. :scared:

9. It was so bizarre.
I've always liked Real Sex--a documentary series that explores sex and sexuality. It's interesting and I learned a lot about some sexuality issues I probably wouldn't have had exposure to prior to watching it.

But that segment threw me completely. I didn't expect to see the couple engage in sex with the doll. I try not to get into judgining the way others express themselves sexually, but I'll be honest--that creeped me out. Big time.
