The science of sexism ....
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 06:04 PM by bliss_eternal
...I'm not sure if anyone here recalls the study released a few years ago, (allegedly) proving once and for all that boys are better at math than girls.

:eyes:

Um, yeah--I thought it was bullshit, too and as such refused to give it much attention. For me the fanfare surrounding it said, "...here's proof that men are smarter than women. Check it out! We now have proof. So there!" Uh-huh. Whatever makes you feel better about yourself, buddy.

If anyone recalls that study, and knows where to find it, please link it here (or any other sexual superiority studies).
They ought to be good for a laugh.

I recalled that piece of silliness because of this:

The Science of Racism

By Henry Louis Gates Jr. | TheRoot.com

Last fall, James Watson, the father of DNA, spoke the unspeakable, saying that blacks are intellectually inferior. In a conversation with The Root Editor-in-Chief Henry Louis Gates Jr., Watson clarified his views about race and genetics. Read what he says now — and why Gates regards him as "a racialist."

:wtf:

Will people EVER stop finding ways to support their bigoted beliefs and "ism's" (i.e. sexism, racism, etc.) with scientific studies?

1. No, they never will.
A great book, that really breaks down the "pseudo science" of gender differences is Same Difference by Caryl Rivers. She really skewers all these nonsense "studies" that the MSM loves to shove in our faces to justify discrimination. It's easy to read but also academically sound and well-argued.

2. What's that saying about one white crow?
It has to do with belief. Something to the effect that you don't need to find a flock of white crows to prove their existence, a single bird will do.

Far be it for me to attempt to instruct a white, male DNA icon, but his speculations come right out of his ass. We know DNA is malleable as the author points out. We know that it's difficult to measure the impact of environment on specific, difficult to define "traits" like intelligence.

So, people like Watson can use "statistics" all they want. There isn't a shred of genetic evidence to support that bullshit.

I didn't go looking for the anti-women studies, they come out every few months seems to me, I'll look later. I found this page, looks like a school project perhaps, of Black scientists. No need to look for a single bird. No IQ's here, but plenty of indications of superior intelligence.

4. So far, I've found the following articles
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 05:03 PM by bliss_eternal
citing some related studies.:

From Science Daily:

2000 article--Women Perform Better In Math When Tested Without Men, Study Says
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/09/000913083409.htm

2007 article--Implicit Stereotypes And Gender Identification May Affect Female Math Performance
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/01/070124104155.htm

From ABC news:

Study: Girls in Sexist Societies Worse at Math
Countries with Higher Gender Equality Produce Girls Who Are Better at Math
:

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=4956998&page=1

***Really surprised by the one below, (out of the usually rather sexist UK):

Boys born bettar at Math than girls 'Myth'
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2051355/Boys-born-better-at-maths-than-girls-'myth'.html

-----------------------------------
While these aren't the studies I specifically had in mind, I thought these present how varied the studies in existence are.

Oh and just an fyi (and a bit of a warning)
--attempting to do this through a popular search engine brings up some disturbing, misogynistic websites. :scared: There are some creepy, bigoted people spewing their bile while hiding out in cyberspace.

6. I'll look in a day or so
I'm in the middle of some new training. It'll be interesting "homework"

I wanted to say, though, when I went looking for Blacks and IQ's (I think those are the terms I used to search at first) I found some vile crap as well. I was so outraged I wanted to link to some of it, but it's too disgusting. I found an interesting essay by Thomas Sowell,(my favorite Black RW bile spewer) and even HE was pissed off about false IQ testing and interpretation. Blamed "liberals" though, of course.

7. The 'girls are bad in math' thing always made me laugh
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 08:03 PM by lizerdbits
My dad had to take calculus 3 times to get a C but my sister has a MS in electrical engineering. Her undergrad degree (with research) was with honors too, not sure about her grad. My dad always sent us to my mom to help with math homework too. Please insert 'exception that proves the rule' logical fallacy now. :)

My mom said they used to tell girls not to be 'too smart' or boys wouldn't like them (which sadly was quite common), and of course boys liking you should be your #1 priority in life. :eyes: I'm so glad I didn't have parents like that and unfortunately I'm sure many girls still do. :(
