The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 7/4/08
Edited on Fri Jul-04-08 03:54 PM by BlueIris
"Green Light and Gamma Ways"

Miss Liberty is green, the horizon and sky
plus yellow skin.

She is a minority too, color
of ridiculous Martian fable
and not a man.

Handicapped, disabled.
Another immigrant.

—Thylias Moss

1. Liberty was never taken very seriously by the dominant people
in our society. Liberty was theirs, and any symbol of liberty for all was just a cartoon, a vain hope. :(

I like the idea of thinking of her as an immigrant. I don't know why I hadn't thought of her that way before. She definitely came here from France, so she's not native born. :)

2. I'm embarrassed to admit this, culturally literate woman that I am,
but I never thought of Lady Liberty this way before I found this poem, either.
