We have a friend, who was freaking out when he found 1) that he was the father of a child 2) He owed a lot of back child support. My husband, who raised two girls for a time without any support from their birth mother, (long story) talked and supported him through it
The man paid. He was present. He stayed available when his child needed him, he rose above the pettiness he had to endure at times, and tried to avoid retaliation. Neither parent was perfect by any means.
He's eternally grateful he did-- that he did his part. He and his kid have a great relationship, and the boy turned out emotionally healthy, with a decent relationship with both parents.
Now what the fuck is so hard to understand about it? If you participate in creating a child, you participate in nurturing and rearing, and that includes monetary support.
I'm glad the asshole went to jail
